Australia-South Africa 2nd Test creates new record [Source: AFP]
South Africa has set a date with Australia in the 2nd Test match of the series at St. George's Park, Gqeberha, but the rain god had some other plans as the start of the contest was delayed. However, even before a single ball was delivered, the two teams equalled a 100-year-old Test record.
Out of the 22 players taking part in the ongoing Test match, 19 of those players are aged 30 or above. 100 years ago, in 1926, the England vs Australia Test in Manchester featured 19 players above 30-years-old.
All players aged 30 or above in 2nd Test
The record for the most players aged above 30 belongs to the England vs Australia match in the 1926 Nottingham Test, when 20 such players stepped on to the field.
From the South African team, the players aged 30 or above are: Aiden Markram, Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke, Ryan Rickelton, Simon Harmer, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada.
From the Australian team, the players aged 30 or above are: Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey (wk), Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood (the entire lineup).
Both teams counting on experience as only three below aged 30
Both Australia and South Africa are counting on their experienced players, as only three out of the 22 players are aged under 30. Interestingly, all three are from the home side.
Matthew Breeztke, Wiaan Mulder, and Marco Jansen are the only three players who are below the age of 30.
All eleven Australian players featuring in the second Test are above 30, showcasing that the Kangaroos are counting on their experienced players to deliver. In fact, in the last couple of years, the visitors have hardly made any changes to their team.
However, the one downside of having experienced players is that almost all the Australian cricketers are entering their twilight, and the visitors need a massive rebuild in the next couple of years.
