The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) seems to be walking a precarious line as tensions are quietly escalating behind the scenes. After stirring a needless standoff against the ICC and the BCCI, one that forced the board to pull the Bangladesh men’s team out of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the BCB is now staring at mounting pressure from the government.

As per reports, the Bangladesh government has already launched an investigation into the BCB election that resulted in Aminul Islam becoming the board’s new president.

Ex-ACC CEO warns BCB, says government can dissolve board

With a possible conflict brewing between the BCB and the Bangladesh government, the board has warned the government regarding the drawbacks of any possible investigation. The board even threatened to take the matter directly to the International Cricket Council (ICC) over government interference.

Notably, the BCB falls under the direct jurisdiction of the National Sports Council (NSC) in Bangladesh.

Former Bangladesh cricketer and ex-ACC CEO Syed Ashraful Haq said that even though the BCB has warned of communicating with the ICC, the NSC has every right to dissolve the BCB if their investigation finds that the board is not running the nation’s cricket properly.

While speaking with the Daily Star, Haq said “It is a kind of threat, saying they communicated with the ICC regarding interference, so that they will be saved. It is quite ironic for the current board to complain to the ICC. If BCB can’t run cricket well, NSC has the right to dissolve it – it’s there in the laws.”

Probe to dig into any possible irregularities in BCB

Syed Ashraful Haq continued that some of the primary intention of the sports ministry probe is to dig into any potential irregularities or abuse of power in Aminul Islam’s BCB. He added that the BCB will soon find itself out of options if the NSC decides to take a drastic action upon finding any wrongdoings, and even threatened the board that the ICC will not be able to save them.

Ashraful explained that even though the BCB is under the ICC, the national board first falls under the NSC, which is the parent body. He said “The cricket leagues weren’t run well, among other issues, and if there were violations of election laws, they can dissolve it. NSC can do that without question because BCB is a part of NSC. We are under the ICC, but first we are under the NSC, which is the parent body. The ICC does not interfere in domestic governance as long as the BCB constitution is followed.”

Troubles mount for Bangladesh cricket

Earlier this month, even the Bangladesh government reportedly approached the ICC to discuss the future of the BCB. The government made the approach on a trail of Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup citing ‘security concerns’ in India.

Bangladesh's new sports minister Aminul Haque has now formed an investigation committee as the government has decided to investigate the diplomatic failures of the BCB.

With the probe underway and tensions escalating, the BCB now finds itself at a critical juncture where its governance, could come under serious scrutiny.
