The KKR franchise cannot seem to catch a break, as its IPL 2026 squad is plagued by repeated injury concerns. Mere weeks after Harshit Rana was ruled out of the tournament, fellow Indian fast bowler Akash Deep is also unlikely to feature in the upcoming season in any capacity due to injury.
To compound their woes, young Sri Lankan paceman Matheesha Pathirana is still awaiting clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) following the injury he sustained during the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Amid mounting concerns over player availability ahead of IPL 2026, a new name has emerged as a potential replacement for Akash Deep, in the form of India’s U19 World Cup-winning breakout star, RS Ambrish.
Who is RS Ambrish?
RS Ambrish is an emerging fast-bowling talent, rapidly gaining attention as one of India’s most promising young prospects. Aged 18 and nearing 19 at the moment, the youngster recently lifted the 2026 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup for the India U19 team in Zimbabwe.

Owing to his tall frame and hard-hitting abilities, Ambrish is even touted by many to become India’s next Hardik Pandya.
He has already played two first-class matches for the Tamil Nadu cricket team, and a handful of unofficial One-Day fixtures for India’s U19 team in South Africa and Zimbabwe over the past few months itself.
RS Ambrish was also a part of the Lyca Kovai Kings in Tamil Nadu’s prestigious T20 tournament, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
RS Ambrish’s career in numbers so far
After impressing the talent scouts in Tamil Nadu in junior cricket, RS Ambrish was selected in Tamil Nadu squad during the 2025-26 Indian domestic season. He received his maiden Ranji Trophy cap for a match against Jharkhand in Coimbatore in October 2025 last year.
Unfortunately for the youngster, he managed to pick up just one wicket in the entire match, and scored 43 runs across both innings with the bat as Tamil Nadu slumped to a huge innings defeat.
The following week in Bengaluru, the Tamil Nadu star picked up one more wicket in his 14-over spell against Nagaland in a high-scoring draw. So far in his two-match first-class career, the 18-year-old has picked up two wickets at an expensive bowling average of 55.
Despite his underwhelming returns, Ambrish’s tight lengths earned him a place in India’s U19 tour of South Africa and for the 2026 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Zimbabwe, both in January and February this year.
In seven matches of the showpiece event, the right-arm fast bowler picked up 11 wickets to emerge as India’s joint-most successful bowler alongside Henil Patel.
RS Ambrish’s potential candidacy in KKR
As of now, several reports are indicating that RS Ambrish is on a path to join the KKR squad as a replacement for Indian fast bowler Akash Deep before the IPL 2026 season.
Since the KKR franchise has a history of backing Indian domestic talent, the youngster might well be handed an opportunity to make an early impression on the big stage if he is brought into the squad. In such a case, Ambrish might find himself brushing shoulders and sharing the dressing room with captain Ajinkya Rahane, and fellow international stars Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, Cameron Green among others.
