The IPL is famously known for the dominance of the batters from its inaugural edition in 2008 till the most recent edition last year in 2025. A lot of matches with 400+ aggregates have been played in the last couple of editions, which reflects the fact that bowlers may have been getting sacrificed for the sake of entertainment.
But there have also been occasions when the bowlers showed they are part of the contest in the IPL. Almost in every season, there have been matches when bowlers completely dominated the batters and bundled the batting side even before the total of 100 runs. Therefore, here’s a look at the five lowest team totals in IPL history.
5 Lowest Team Totals In IPL History
RCB - 49 vs KKR, IPL 2017
The defending champions, RCB, hold the most unwanted record in IPL history. It is the record of scoring the lowest team total in the tournament’s 19-year-long history. It was the 27th match of IPL 2017, played between KKR and RCB at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
The then-RCB skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first. The KKR were bundled out at the score of just 131 runs in 19.3 overs.
While defending the target, the KKR’s bowling attack wrapped up RCB at the double-digit score of just 49 runs in 9.4 overs. It is the lowest team total in IPL history, even after nine years of RCB scoring it.
Rajasthan Royals - 58 vs RCB, IPL 2009
It was just the second IPL edition in 2009, and the then-defending champions Rajasthan Royals were taking on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the tournament’s second game in Cape Town. RCB won the toss and decided to bat first.
They scored 133 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs. While chasing the target, the Rajasthan Royals’ batting attack failed drastically against the RCB bowling lineup led by the spin great, Anil Kumble (5/5 in 3.1 overs).
Eventually, the Royals were bowled out at the score of just 58 runs in 15.1 overs, achieving the then-lowest team total in IPL history. Later, it was surpassed by RCB’s 49-run total in 2017.
Rajasthan Royals - 59 vs RCB, IPL 2023
After 14 years of their 58-run horror in 2009, the Rajasthan Royals, in IPL 2023, achieved the third all-time lowest total in the tournament’s history. They were taking on RCB in the 60th game of the tournament at their home ground in Jaipur.
RCB posted a total of 171 runs for the loss of just five wickets in the first innings. Later in the second half, RCB’s bowling attack completely crushed the Rajasthan Royals for the total of just 59 runs in 10.3 overs. RCB won this game by a mammoth margin of 112 runs.
Wayne Parnell registered the best bowling figures for RCB, picking ‘three wickets for just 10 runs in three overs’. Besides him, Michael Bracewell and Karn Sharma also claimed two wickets each, alongside a wicket each bagged by Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell.
Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) - 66 vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2017
IPL’s 10th edition in 2017 was probably one of the seasons with the most number of the lowest team totals in the tournament’s history. Another lowest team total came in the tournament’s 45th game, played between the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
The hosts won the toss and invited the Mumbai Indians to bat first. MI posted a massive total of 212 runs for the loss of just three wickets. While chasing the target, the Delhi Capitals collapsed miserably at the score of just 66 runs in 13.4 overs. It is the fourth-lowest team total in the IPL history.
Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma scalped three wickets, alongside two wickets picked by Lasith Malinga. Mitchell McClenaghan also claimed a wicket.
Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) - 67, vs Punjab Kings IPL 2017
Like the Rajasthan Royals, the Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals) also have two entries on the list of the lowest team totals in IPL history. In the 36th game of IPL 2017, Delhi Capitals took on the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
The then-hosts’ skipper Glenn Maxwell won the toss and trusted his bowlers to take charge. The PBKS bowlers lived up to their captain’s expectations and bowled out the Delhi Capitals at the score of just 67 runs in 17.1 overs. It happened to be the fifth-lowest team total in the 18-season history of IPL.
