The Zimbabwe vs Bangladesh third T20I probably saw one of the most controversial matches of the year. The series, which had a breathtaking decider awaiting on July 19, with the scores tied at 1-1, had Bengal Tigers win the match, but at what cost? 

Chasing a target of 144 runs, Bangladesh was almost out of contention before an intervention from the umpires brought them back to life, which later led to a massive controversial moment on the field involving Brad Evans and Mahedi Hasan. As tempers flared, the teams gathered in the middle to separate the two from the altercation.

The final over required Brad Evans to bowl and defend a total of five runs, which seemed quite difficult in a T20 match, especially with Mosaddek Hossain and Tanzid Hasan at the crease. Although Mosaddek was new to the crease, Tanzid was a set batter on 65. 

The very first delivery had Tanzid strike a single, and the next ball resulted in the dismissal of Mosaddek. Saifuddin took guard, and Evans dismissed him on the next ball too, putting himself on a hat-trick. 

As Bangladesh's wickets toppled quickly, Mahedi Hasan came to the crease at number eight. What seemed to be an intense thriller saw Hasan take guard against Evans on the fourth ball of the over, with a possible hat-trick awaiting Evans.

The controversial umpiring decision and the ugly fight

As Hasan took guard and Bangladesh needed four runs off three deliveries, Brad Evans bowled a low full toss to Hasan, who missed it while attempting a flick. As the ball crashed onto his pads, it looked like a straight-forward dismissal, with Evans securing his hat-trick. 

However, the umpires had other thoughts and declared it a dead ball because the wicketkeeper was moving his hands during the delivery to signal Evans. This decision from the umpire had Brad Evans furious. 

However, he bowled the next delivery and Mahedi Hasan smashed a massive four off the next ball. This helped Bangladesh clinch the thriller and seal the series 2-1. As soon as he hit the winning runs, some words were exchanged between Brad and Mahedi, with the two almost engaging in a physical altercation. 

With verbal exchanges and heated gestures between the two, Zimbabwe's fielders had to intervene to separate the duo and avoid any conflict on the field.

What does the rule say about the dead ball?

As per the rules of cricket, the umpire is required to call and signal a dead ball if any fielder makes any significant or unfair movement that distracts the batter while the bowler is running in to deliver the ball. 

In this case, the umpire's decision stands correct. While minor stance adjustments or movements while getting into position for fielding are perfectly fine, the umpire deems any movement by a fielder to be a deliberate distraction if he shifts position or makes distracting movements.

Zimbabwe fail to secure series at home

Nevertheless, batting first, Zimbabwe started with Brian Bennett taking all the burden with his 47-run knock after losing his opening partner early. Later, Dion Myers joined him to stitch together a 71-run partnership for the second wicket, with Myers later launching an attack to score 74 runs off 53 deliveries. 

This stand helped Zimbabwe post a decent total of 143 on the board, but Bangladesh had their chase planned early despite losing Saif Hassan in the very first over. Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, and Towhid Hridoy steered the chase alongside Mahedi Hasan's brilliant last-ball heroics to seal the series and a four-wicket win.
