Ben Duckett has blown hot and cold throughout the ODI series against India, but in the series decider, the southpaw came to life as he tormented the visitors with his breathtaking batting to register numerous ODI records.

England won the toss on a flat Lord’s wicket, and the decision to bat first paid dividends as Duckett and his partner, Jacob Bethell, broke several records to register an opening stand of 192 runs.

Duckett was the chief tormentor for England as he registered his fourth ODI hundred and became just the sixth English opener to score an ODI and a Test ton at Lord’s. Moreover, he also broke a long-standing 47-year-old ODI feat of the great West Indian batter, Vivian Richards.

The left-handed English batter was dismissed for a well-compiled 141 runs, and interestingly, this has been the highest individual ODI score by a batter at the iconic Lord’s Stadium.

Viv Richards held the previous record (138*) in the 1979 World Cup. The feat stood tall for 47 years before Duckett surpassed the West Indian great to etch his name in the history books.

This has also been Duckett’s second-highest individual score in ODIs, with his 165 against Australia in 2025 remaining at the top position.

The left-handed opener was 18 runs shy of breaking Andrew Strauss’ record of smashing the highest individual ODI score against India, but the opening batter missed the milestone. Strauss slammed 158 against the Men in Blue during the 2011 World Cup game in Bengaluru.

Duckett ends century drought with scintillating innings

While Duckett has done well in the Test format and has consistently scored runs for the England side, the same cannot be said about his ODI form, as he has struggled to score runs on a consistent basis.

It was during the Champions Trophy 2025 match against Australia in Lahore that the southpaw scored his last ODI century for England. Since then, he has played 16 innings and has not scored a single century before ending the drought in the India vs England 3rd ODI.

Since that knock, the batter has struggled to score big, but all that came to an end against a lacklustre Indian bowling attack that had no Bumrah due to an injury.

He forged a crucial partnership alongside Bethell, and once the left-handed opener was dismissed, he scored valuable runs with Joe Root before getting dismissed by Prince Yadav.
