Azmatullah Omarzai has been reprimanded and handed one demerit point for showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during the second ODI.
Notably, he was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision.
The incident took place during Afghanistan’s innings after the match was reduced to 47 overs per side due to rain. Omarzai was dismissed in the 41st over while batting on 33. However, he did not immediately leave the crease and expressed his displeasure through gestures.

Azmatullah Omarzai Expressed Displeasure
Notably, Omarzai appeared unhappy with the decision as he believed the sound came from his bat hitting the deck rather than the ball taking the edge. However, the decision stood, and the Afghanistan all-rounder eventually had to walk back to the dressing room.
Meanwhile, Omarzai admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction from Dean Cosker of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Therefore, no formal hearing was required.
The charge was brought by on-field umpires Gareth Morrison and Roly Black, third umpire Johnny Kennedy, and fourth umpire George Brolly.
It is important to note that this is Azmatullah Omarzai ’s first demerit point in the last 24 months. A Level 1 breach can result in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the match fee and one or two demerit points.
Despite the incident, Afghanistan comfortably defeated Ireland by 92 runs and took the lead in the five-match ODI series.
