After a comprehensive defeat in the home series against India, Australia are getting ready to face Pakistan in a three T20Is ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The opening encounter of the three-match series will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
According to reports, Australia will miss their captain Mitchell Marsh, who is set to be rested for the first T20I. Marsh recently featured in the BBL final for the Perth Scorchers and will likely be one of the high-profile players to miss out alongside Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis.
With these three key players set to be rested, Australia will have to strike a balance between bat and ball through judicious selection of their first-choice XI. As the visitors gear up for the first T20I against Pakistan, let's analyse and find out their probable combination for this match.
Top Order: Travis Head, Matthew Short, Matt Renshaw
In Mitchell Marsh's absence, Matthew Short is expected to open the batting for Australia in the first T20I against Pakistan. The swashbuckling right-handed batter has opened in eleven T20Is, amassing 253 runs at a blistering strike rate of 161.15. Besides providing the tourists with a fiery start, Short can be handy with the ball on spin-friendly Pakistani pitches.
Matt Renshaw showcased remarkable form in the BBL 2025-26, scoring 324 runs at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 153.55. Renshaw is naturally a top-order batter and hence could play at number three for Australia following his BBL heroics.
Middle order and allrounders: Cameron Green, Cooper Connolly, Jack Edwards, Josh Philippe
Cameron Green as an incredible batting record at number four, having smashed 347 runs at an average of 57.83 and a strike rate of 162.15 in nine T20I innings. So, he will likely spearhead the Australian middle order with Cooper Connolly, who bagged 15 wickets in 11 BBL 2025-26 matches for the Perth Scorchers. Just like Short, Connolly can also be useful in the middle overs and assist Zampa as an integral member of the Australian spin department.
There could be a toss-up between Mitchell Owen and Jack Edwards for the second seam-bowling allrounder's role, but the latter might pip the former in the race, owing to a more impactful BBL campaign, as evidenced by the data presented in the table below.
| Criterion | Owen | Edwards |
| Innings | 11 | 10 |
| Runs | 166 | 133 |
| Average/SR | 15.09/195.29 | 22.17/168.35 |
| Wickets | 4 | 19 |

Meanwhile, with Josh Inglis set to be rested, Josh Philippe is the frontrunner to don the wicketkeeping gloves for Australia in the first T20I.
Bowlers: Xavier Bartlett, Ben Dwarshuis, Adam Zampa, Sean Abbott
Ben Dwarshuis, who can swing the ball up front, is expected to lead the Australian pace attack. He could be accompanied by Xavier Bartlett, who had a stellar BBL campaign, scalping 15 wickets in the recently concluded season.
Adam Zampa will lead the Australia spin unit, while Sean Abbott could be preferred over the young Mahli Beardman for the third seamer's slot due to his experience.
