Australia Playing XI vs Bangladesh For 2nd Test Announced; Renshaw Returns, Boland Misses

In a significant development, Cricket Australia confirmed the Australia playing XI vs Bangladesh for the second Test. Led by Pat Cummins, Australia will take on Bangladesh in the decider of the two-match series at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay after losing the opening encounter in Darwin

The hosts made one change to their playing XI from the last game, replacing Jake Weatherald with Matt Renshaw. Marnus Labuschagne retained his place despite a persistent lean patch. Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon dramatically survived a potential axing, meaning Scott Boland will once again warm the bench despite proving his mettle in The Ashes 2025-26.

Jake Weatherald made his debut in the Ashes 2025-26 and blew hot and cold in his maiden assignment for the national side. As the Australians retained the urn, the selectors persisted with Weatherald for the home series against Bangladesh despite the batter managing only 201 runs at a modest average of 22.33 in the Ashes Down Under.

However, Weatherald's poor returns in the series opener against Bangladesh didn't help his cause. The gritty batter could score only 23 runs in two innings combined, with Australia shockingly going down to a spirited Bangladeshi outfit for the first time in own backyard.

The shameful defeat in Darwin prompted the Australian selectors to revamp the opening pair, as Matt Renshaw received a recall to the Test squad for the series decider in Mackay. Renshaw played his last Test against India in Delhi in 2023. He had a terrific Sheffield Shield campaign last year, amassing 499 runs in 10 innings.

Overall, Matt Renshaw has slammed 645 Test runs in 14 matches at an average of 29.3. He has four fifty-plus scores to his name, and will look forward to exploit the conditions in Mackay, having averaged 107 with the bat at the venue in First-Class cricket.

Renshaw comes in as a straightforward swap for Weatherald in a solitary change to the Australia playing XI vs Bangladesh for the 2nd Test.

Labuschagne, Lyon get another game; Boland misses out

Marnus Labuschagne has been struggling for runs, with his last Test century dating back to 2023. The gritty batter has managed only 1655 Test runs at an average of 30.99 since 2023.

However, the lack of more reliable options in the domestic circuit has worked in Labuschagne's favour, with the Australian selectors persisting with him for yet another time despite his inconsistent run. Having said that, Labuschagne's place certainly hangs by a thread, as another flop show could open the doors for his exit from Australia's Test XI.

On a similar note, Nathan Lyon dramatically made his way back into the Australia playing XI vs Bangladesh for the second Test after skipper Pat Cummins suggested that the hosts would pick an all-pace attack in Mackay.

Although Cummins all but stamped Scott Boland's comeback to the Australian XI for the decider, Lyon retained his spot after Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald suspected the conditions in Mackay would favour spin bowling following a pitch inspection.

As a result, Scott Boland was forced to warm the bench for the second consecutive time in the series, with the hosts sticking to their first-choice attack comprising Cummins, Lyon, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the Australia playing XI vs Bangladesh for the second Test.
