Sophie Molineux is set to be named as the new all-format captain of the Australia Women’s cricket team. The explosive claim surfaced following the retirement announcement of ex-skipper and legendary wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy.

Sophie Molineux made her Australia debut back in March 2018 during a T20I tri-series in India. To date, the 28-year-old has featured in three Tests, 17 ODIs and 38 T20I matches for the Australian cricket.

Sophie Molineux to replace Alyssa Healy as new captain

According to 7Cricket, Sophie Molineux will soon be named Australia’s new all-format captain. The 28-year-old will be replacing longtime teammate Alyssa Healy in the process, considering the legendary wicketkeeper-batter is set to retire from international cricket after Australia’s upcoming all-format series against Team India.

Sophie Molineux made her international debut back in March 2018 under the leadership of former captain Meg Lanning. Following the silent exit of Lanning from international cricket, Molineux played a couple of years for Australia under Alyssa Healy’s leadership.

Sophie Molineux’s career at a glance

Sophie Molineux already holds a distinguished career for the Australian team. She was part of the Australian group that lifted the 2018 and 2020 T20 World Cups in West Indies and Australia respectively, doing so under the leadership of Meg Lanning on both occasions.

She also toured India late last year as part of the Australian team for the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. While Australia reached the semifinals of the competition before losing to eventual winners India, Sophie Molineux picked up eight wickets in just four innings at an impressive bowling average of 24.50.

Overall, the left-arm spinner has picked up 31 wickets in just 17 ODI matches at an average of 17, and another 41 in just 38 T20I innings at 18.68. In four innings spanning three Tests, the cricketer has scalped four wickets to have claimed 76 wickets in her international career so far.

Sophie Molineux also holds a healthy batting average of 24.25 in Test cricket as a lower-order batter. However, she played the last of those Tests back in February 2024 a couple of years ago.

What’s next for Sophie Molineux?

Sophie Molineux recently played a handful of matches for the Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL 2025-26 season. She also reprised her role for the Victoria Women’s cricket team earlier this month during the Women’s National Cricket League in Australia.

As of now, Sophie Molineux is expected to be named in Australia’s squad for the upcoming all-format series against India at home. However, it remains to be seen if Molineux will be given Australian captaincy straightaway in Alyssa Healy’s farewell series or if the leadership change will be implemented only after her international swan song.

Either way, the impending transition signals the beginning of a new leadership chapter for Australian women’s cricket. With Sophie Molineux reportedly poised to take up the big role, the left-arm all-rounder is now presented with a huge opportunity by guiding Australia in future ICC events.
