2:16 AM IST, 9:46 PM Local Time: That's the end of the game. England Women proved to be too strong for Sri Lanka Women in the first game of the three-match T20I series. A solid performance sees England Women beat Sri Lanka Women by 12 runs on the DLS method and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Sri Lanka Women had a monumental task ahead of them to chase 187. They got off to a decent start as Vishmi Gunaratne and Chamari Athapaththu played some good shots as they scored 23 at the end of 3.1 overs before rain arrived. The play resumed after a short break and the revised target according to the DLS target was 68 after six overs for the Lankan side.
Athapaththu hit Mahika Gaur for a six in the fourth over but the debutant bounced back to dismiss the Lankan skipper on 15 to pick up her maiden wicket in an England shirt. Hasini Perera was trapped in front of the stumps by Charlie Dean on a duck. Nilakshi de Silva tried hard and scored 18* off just eight balls but it wasn't enough as they fell short by 12 runs on the DLS method.
Earlier, the game was reduced to 17-overs-per-side due to rain and Sri Lanka Women skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and opted to field first. The decision backfired as the England Women got off to a flying start. Danielle Wyatt played some outstanding strokes and Maia Bouchier supported her nicely from the other end. They scored 55 at the end of the powerplay. Bouchier was run out on 22 as the 77-run opening stand came to an end in the eighth over. Wyatt hit seven boundaries and a six before getting cleaned up two short of her fifty.
Alice Capsey along with Freya Kemp made sure that the run rate didn’t fall as they kept scoring at a brisk rate. Kemp played a good cameo of 20 off 10 balls before getting stumped. There was no stopping Capsey as she continued playing her strokes and brought up fifty in just 26 balls. She fell soon on 51. Skipper Heather Knight remained unbeaten on 23 off 17 balls to power her side to 186 at the end of their innings. Sri Lanka Women picked up four wickets but failed to keep a check on the scoring rate and went on a journey throughout the innings.
