On June 9, 2026, Mehidy Hasan Miraz-led Bangladesh rewrote history, registering their only second-ever ODI win over mighty Australia. The home side defeated a depleted Australian side by 86 runs via the DLS method in the first match of the series in Mirpur.

Returning to ODI cricket after four years, Mosaddek Hossain made an unbeaten 86 off 70 balls. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 67, while opener Tanzid Hasan added 54 as Bangladesh posted 284/8.

In reply, Australia were restricted to 191/9 in 42.2 overs before lightning and rain stopped play. Chasing 285, Australia still needed 94 runs from 46 balls when the match was halted, and it could not be resumed.

Bangladesh beat Australia for the first time in 21 years in ODIs

It is worth noting that the victory was Bangladesh’s first ODI win over Australia since 2005, and their only 2nd win against the six-time world champions.

On June 18, 2005, Bangladesh pulled off one of the greatest upsets in cricket history by defeating the then-world champions Australia by 5 wickets in the NatWest Series at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Thus, in this article, let’s take a look at five major cricketing events that had not taken place before Bangladesh first registered their ODI victory over Australia.

5 Huge Cricket Events You Won’t Believe Happened Since Bangladesh Last Beat Australia in an ODI

5) IPL didn’t exist

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was inaugurated on April 18, 2008. Founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the league kicked off its very first match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, featuring the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The inaugural tournament featured eight original city-based franchises and concluded on June 1, 2008, with the Rajasthan Royals emerging as the first-ever champions.

Interestingly, IPL came into existence three years after Bangladesh secured their maiden ODI win against Australia.

4) RoKo were yet to receive their maiden India caps

In modern day, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma (affectionately known as "RoKo") are among the biggest names in cricket.

However, they made their respective international debuts for India in separate matches, with Rohit stepping onto the field first in June 2007 and Kohli following in August 2008.

3) Shakib Al Hasan had yet to make his international debut

Shakib Al Hasan is undeniably one of the biggest and most celebrated figures in the history of Bangladesh cricket. He is a global cricketing icon, universally regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders the sport has ever seen.

However, Hasan hadn’t even made his international debut for Bangladesh yet when the side first won an ODI against Australia in 2005.

Shakib played his maiden match for Bangladesh on August 6, 2006, in an ODI against Zimbabwe. At the age of 19, he scored 30 runs and picked up the wicket of Elton Chigumbura in Harare.

2) India only had two ICC titles to their name

By the time Bangladesh defeated Australia in an ODI, the Indian Cricket Team had yet to reach the unparalleled heights it is on today.

Before 2005, the world beaters had only two ICC trophies to their name: the 1983 Cricket World Cup and the 2002 Champions Trophy (shared with Sri Lanka).

By the time Bangladesh won for the second time (2026), India won 8 major ICC trophies in men's senior international cricket: 2 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup titles (1983 and 2011), 3 T20 World Cup trophies (2007, 2024, 2026), and 3 ICC Champions Trophy titles (2002, 2013, 2025).

1) Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was unborn

Possibly the most interesting fact in the list for 5 major cricketing events that didn’t exist before the last time Bangladesh defeated Australia in ODIs: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was yet to be born.

The fifteen-year-old has rapidly transformed from a prodigy into a global cricketing phenomenon, most notably dominating the Indian Premier League for the Rajasthan Royals.

Currently, he is undeniably the most talked-about teenager in world cricket. Interestingly, born on March 27, 2011, precisely 6 years after Bangladesh secured a historic maiden ODI win against the world champions.
