Sri Lanka clearly needs a miracle to beat India in the second Test match as the hosts have been enforced a follow-on, and they have to bat out of their skin to make India bat again in the second innings. The hosts struggled in the first innings as the Indian bowlers ran riot, and Sri Lanka got bundled out for just 290.
India batted first after winning the toss, and the Shubman Gill-led side posted 503/9, courtesy of a Dhruv Jurel century. In reply, the home team was never really in the hunt, as they crumbled and allowed India to enforce a follow-on.
Sri Lanka have a tough task ahead, as only four teams in Test history have managed to win a game after getting the follow-on, and here is a list of them all.
1) England vs Australia - 1894 (winner England)
In the first Test between Australia and England in Sydney in 1894, the hosts batted first and posted 586 runs, with George Giffen scoring a stellar hundred, and Syd Gregory smashing a double ton.
In reply, England crumbled and got all out for 325 runs as the Aussies enforced a follow-on. In their second innings, England batted brilliantly and scored 437 runs as the Australian team failed to attain a target of 177 in their second innings, and England won the game out of nowhere.
2) England vs Australia - 1981 (winner England)
England once again came from behind to win a memorable Test match against Australia in 1981. The contest took place in Leeds, as the visitors (Australia), batted first and scored 401/9, with John Dyson scoring a century.

England batters struggled to score runs and were dismissed for 174 runs as a confident-looking Australian team gave the follow-on and asked England to bat again.
In their second innings, the great Ian Botham smashed a sensational hundred as the hosts posted 356 runs. Australia needed 130 to win, but England were outstanding with the ball as Australia lost by 18 runs.
3) India vs Australia - 2001 (winner India)
Arguably one of the greatest Test matches was played at the Eden Gardens in 2001 when India collided against Australia. The visitors batted first and scored 445 runs, as the Indian batters failed to deliver the goods and got bundled out for 171.
A follow-on was enforced by the Australian team, but India staged a remarkable comeback, courtesy of VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid. While Dravid scored 180 runs, Laxman played the knock of his life to score 281 as Australia needed 384 runs to win.
In reply, the Aussies crumbled in front of the Indian bowlers and got knocked out for 212 as India won by 171 runs.
4) England vs New Zealand - 2023 (winner New Zealand)
The two teams met in Wellington in the second Test match, and the rampant England side batted first as they posted 435/8 in their first innings.
New Zealand struggled and were all out for just 209 as Ben Stokes enforced a follow-on and asked the Kiwis to bat again.
In their second innings, Kane Williamson scored a stunning century as New Zealand scored 483 runs and set a target of 258 runs. In reply, England registered 256 and lost the game by the barest of margins (1 run).
