MS Dhoni was arguably the greatest keeper behind the stumps purely because of his ability to pull off breathtaking stumpings in a flash. In cricket, coaches advise youngsters to follow MS Dhoni when it comes to doing the job behind the stumps, and in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2026 contest, Ishan Kishan gave a fitting tribute to him.

Ishan Kishan’s East Zone is taking on the North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2026 match, and the East Zone skipper, who failed to deliver with the bat, produced a moment of magic behind the stumps to dismiss batter Ashish Thapa.

Ishan Kishan's stunning stumping resembles MS Dhoni's style

North East Zone was already in trouble, and Ishan Kishan’s stunning reflexes increased their headache. Abhijit Sarkar, the East Zone bowler, delivered a good-length ball down the leg side, and Ashish Thapa missed his attempted flick shot as he lost his balance and was out of the crease.

Kishan swiftly moved to his left to collect the ball, but he failed to grab it cleanly as it popped out of his hands. Any other keeper might have fumbled, but Kishan kept his cool as he was quick to grab the ball, and he dislodged the bails even before the batter could get his back leg inside the crease.

He moved like a flash to dislodge the bails, and it reminded of MS Dhoni, who, in his playing days, was known for stumping out the batters in the blink of an eye.

How Kishan's stumping mimicked MS Dhoni's technique

MS Dhoni holds the record for the fastest stumping done in cricket (0.08 seconds), and he was known for his excellent glovework behind the stumps, which made him world-famous, and many cricketers have tried to copy him. Dhoni was efficient against spinners and was equally potent against medium pacers, as batters were in danger if MSD was behind the stumps.

Moreover, the former Indian captain had unmatched anticipation as his reading of the batter's foot, to go with the pitch bounce, allowed him to initiate the movement even before the batter could react.

Ishan Kishan showcased the same trait in the Duleep Trophy 2026 match, as he was quick to move to his left when the batter missed the ball. Despite failing to catch the ball on the first attempt, Kishan kept his calm, just like MSD, and he was quick enough to inflict the stumping.

Kishan not known for his stunning glovework behind the stumps

Kishan managed to nonchalantly pull off a stumping in the Duleep Trophy game, but interestingly, he is not known for his swift glovework behind the stumps.

Time and again, he has fumbled simple stumping chances, and one such incident occurred in the T20 World Cup 2026.

In the India vs USA T20 World Cup match, Varun Chakaravarthy bowled a googly outside the off, and the USA batter, Milind Kumar, lost his balance while trying to play a shot and was cut in half.

Kishan miscalculated the bounce as he almost fumbled the ball, but he reacted quickly to dislodge the bails before the batter could get back in. The USA batter’s slow reaction allowed Kishan to stump him, but the situation shouldn’t have arisen in the first place, and it showcased Kishan’s not-so-quick reflexes.

He missed quite a few simple chances on the UK T20I tour, and hence there is scope for improvement.
