Before Ashok Sharma, 21 Indian players had made their T20I debut in Zimbabwe, and he becomes the 22nd player as the tearaway pacer will aim to cement his place in the team with a solid performance.
The 2015 and 2016 Zimbabwe tours witnessed the Indian team management handing out most T20I debuts. The 2015 tour witnessed five debutants for India, with Sanju Samson and Axar Patel, the two big names, who were a part of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.
On the other hand, the 2016 India tour of Zimbabwe had seven debutants, as a fresh squad was sent for the Zimbabwean tour. Yuzvendra Chahal and KL Rahul were the big names from that tour, and the duo went on to become household names.
Kohli, Ashwin, two big names debuted in 2010
Two of India’s biggest names in the last 15 years, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, made their T20I debuts for India in 2010 during the Zimbabwe tour.
The pair achieved massive success in the format, as both superstars played in numerous T20 World Cups and attained glory, especially Kohli, who became a world champion in 2024 and was also the Player of the Tournament in 2014 and 2016.
Abhishek Sharma, who had an outstanding IPL 2024 season was picked in the India squad for the Zimbabwe tour, and the batter didn’t disappoint as he even registered a scintillating ton.
Since his debut, the left-handed batter has become an integral part of the T20I squad and has already amassed 1618 runs in 53 T20I games.
What Ashok Sharma brings to the table for India in T20Is?
Ashok Sharma is fast and furious, and he brings raw pace to the table for the Indian side. The Zimbabwe batters are excellent players of medium pace bowling, but they hardly come up against a bowler who can clock in excess of 150 km/h.
On a sticky Harare wicket, Ashok Sharma can bamboozle the Zimbabwean batters with his sheer pace and accurate lines and lengths.
