The India vs Zimbabwe T20I series will commence on Thursday afternoon, and right before the start of the first T20I in Harare, the hosts have suffered a major injury jolt with a key player ruled out of the 3-game series.

Zimbabwe picked up a strong squad for the India T20I matches, but they have to play without their key player, Milton Shumba, who has been ruled out of the three matches, with his replacement announced.

In the latest development, Milton Shumba, the Zimbabwean batter, has been ruled out of the T20I matches against India due to a right hamstring injury.

With the batter ruled out, the Zimbabwean selectors have drafted in Innocent Kaia as his replacement in the T20I squad vs India.

The injury comes as a blow for the hosts as Shumba was set to play a key role in the India vs Zimbabwe T20I matches.

Scans confirmed on Tuesday the extent of Shumba’s injury, and the Zimbabwe board was swift to announce his replacement in the squad.

Kaia returns to Zimbabwe’s T20I squad for the first time since featuring against India at Harare Sports Club in July 2024.

Why Innocent Kaia was drafted into the team as replacement?

Innocent Kaia brings in a wealth of experience in the Zimbabwe T20I team, and although the numbers are not promising, Kaia can take down any attack inside the powerplay. 

Moreover, the surface in Harare will favour the batters who will try to manoeuvre the field. The ball doesn’t come onto the bat nicely, and technical players are likely to succeed. Kaia falls in that category as the batter can keep the scoreboard ticking with his running between the wickets.

Plus, the Zimbabwean batter is a brilliant player of spin-bowling, and India has a plethora of them in their ranks. He can be the one to tackle the Indian spin-bowlers on a sticky Harare surface.

Who will Kaia replace if he comes into the playing XI?

Kaia has been brought into the T20I team for his experience and ability to play on tricky wickets, but the question arises: Where will he play in the playing XI?

The only player he can replace in the team is Tadiwanashe Marumani. The middle-order is stacked with quality players, and normally, Brian Bennett would open alongside Marumani.

However, Marumani struggled for runs in the last T20I series against Bangladesh. The batter played in all three matches, and the Bangladesh bowlers had him on the tight ropes. He scored just 14, 4, and 4 runs in the three matches, and perhaps the management could bring in Kaia at the top to replace the out-of-form batter.
