The advent of the Impact Player rule has redefined tactical flexibility in the Indian Premier League (IPL), turning substitutions into match-defining masterstrokes rather than mere playing XI adjustments. In a format clearly dictated by fine margins, the true impact of these “Impact Players” has often been felt in high-stakes contests or close encounters.

The Impact Players, especially when unleashed at pivotal junctures, have repeatedly amplified their influence with decisive knocks. Here, we take a look at four of the best batting performances unleashed by Impact Players in the history of the IPL.

4. 89 - Karun Nair (DC) vs MI, Delhi, 2025

Playing his first IPL match in nearly three years, Team India discard Karun Nair celebrated the occasion with a scorching 89-run knock from just 40 balls. Batting at number three for the Capitals in match number 29 of the IPL 2025 season in Delhi against the Mumbai Indians, Nair launched five huge sixes and 12 sizzling boundaries to storm his side to 119 at the halfway stage of the innings.

Unfortunately for the Capitals, the rest of their batters failed to upheld the Karun Nair-induced momentum as the franchise ended up falling 12 runs short of Mumbai Indians’ behemoth 205 in a high-scoring thriller.

3. 90 - Sameer Rizvi (DC) vs MI, Delhi, 2026

Hard-hitting all-rounder Sameer Rizvi was ‘subbed’ into the Delhi Capitals playing XI after fast bowler Mukesh Kumar finished his bowling spell against Mumbai Indians in match number eight of the IPL 2026 season. Chasing 163 for a win at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Rizvi batted at number four and arrived to the crease within the second over of the innings itself after the early loss of KL Rahul and Nitish Rana.

Taking on the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner, the uncapped Indian cricketer blasted 90 runs from just 51 deliveries with seven cracking boundaries and as many sixes. His innings helped the Capitals blaze past the five-time champions with nearly two overs to spare.

2. 107* - Jos Buttler (RR) vs KKR, Kolkata, 2024

England batting great Jos Buttler played as an ‘Impact Substitute’ for the Rajasthan Royals against KKR in match number 31 of the IPL 2024 season. Chasing a monumental 224-run target at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, the senior opening batter fired an unbeaten 107* from just 60 deliveries with nine fours and six sixes.

Despite receiving little assistance from his batting colleagues, Buttler carried his bat throughout the chase as the Royals overhauled KKR by two wickets in a last-ball thriller. The legendary opener took a special liking to his Australian nemesis Mitchell Santner, rendering the speedster to an expensive 50-run spell off his four overs in the high-scoring game.

1. 108* - Sai Sudharsan (GT) vs DC, Delhi, 2025

Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan rained down heavy on Delhi Capitals bowlers in match 60 of the IPL 2025 season. Batting alongside captain Shubman Gill at the top of the order in a chase of 200 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the two cricketers forged an unbroken 205-run partnership in just 19 overs.

Sudharsan plundered 12 fours and four huge sixes, shaping an electrifying 108* off 61 balls in his innings as the Titans cantered to a comprehensive 10-wicket win with an over still intact in the game. The innings continue to remain the highest-ever individual score ever recorded by an Impact Player in the history of the IPL.
