England Cricket were involved in one of the biggest controversies in the cricketing calendar when two of their cricketers were involved in a nightclub brawl during the Test series against New Zealand.
Later, the Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum-led side lost the series by 1-2, leading to Stokes’ retirement and McCullum vacating his chair as Test coach.
Now, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is searching for McCullum's successor, and RCB head coach Andy Flower's name is being considered for the job.
Under Flower's astute leadership, RCB not only lifted their maiden IPL title but also scripted history by winning the tournament back-to-back. Notably, he has won titles with Multan Sultans (PSL) and Gulf Giants (ILT20).
Among his international achievements are England’s Ashes 2011/12 win in Australia and their T20 World Cup triumph in 2010.
In this article, we will discuss the roadblocks that may prevent Andy Flower from returning to the England head coach's chair.
RCB won't allow Andy Flower to let go of
First and foremost, the RCB job has to be the fattest pay cheque for Andy Flower currently. The Zimbabwean coach is having some success as RCB head coach since taking over the reins ahead of IPL 2024. Since then, RCB has played in the playoffs in all three seasons and has eventually won the ultimate silverware twice.

With Flower being the cornerstone of RCB’s recent success, the two-time champions won’t allow him to part ways with them, despite the ECB looking to allow their next Test head coach to serve in the IPL.
Tossing between IPL and coaching an international team won’t be easy, and not many have managed to do so in the past.
London Spirit duties may come in between
Andy Flower is hired by London Spirit, along with the whole RCB staff, ahead of the 2026 season. Although his calendar in the Hundred won't clash with England's Test matches, it will surely pose some hurdles in the buildup to the tournament.
Meanwhile, at 58 years of age, he will be more pleased to coach as little as he can. Thus, coaching two franchise teams over the course of a year would be sufficient for the Zimbabwean legend.
Andy Flower and demons of past as England's head coach
Having coached England nearly a decade and a half ago, Andy Flower is regarded as one of the most successful English coaches. Under him, they lifted their first-ever ICC trophy, the T20 World Cup in 2010 in the Caribbean.
Apart from that, he was extremely successful as a Test coach, winning 28 Test matches during his 60-Test tenure. Moreover, he was the top boss when England won the famous Ashes 2011/12 Down Under, later making it a hat trick of series victories against Australia under his regime.
However, Flower’s stint also had a dark side. He had a bitter relationship with the then-English skipper, Kevin Pietersen. The stylish batter, who had a rather sorrowful end to his career, calls the legendary coach the reason for his downfall.
Thus, the former Zimbabwean great may not be eager to retrace that forgotten road.
Who will become England's next Test head coach?
Apart from Andy Flower, other names are floating around in reports, such as Rahul Dravid, Jonathan Trott, Andrew Flintoff, Gareth Batty, Justin Langer, Darren Lehmann and Ravichandran Ashwin.
England are currently busy in the white-ball series against India at home, but their next international assignment is a three-game Test series vs Pakistan, starting on August 19.
Before preparing for that series, the ECB will have to name their next head coach, even if on an interim basis.
