Sanju Samson vs Ruturaj Gaikwad IPL Captaincy Comparison: Should CSK Leadership Be Revamped?

The Chennai Super Kings’ disappointing IPL 2026 campaign has thrown Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership into the midst of crushing criticism.

A crushing home defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday all but ended CSK’s playoff hopes, and with the team struggling, ex-cricketers publicly suggested that ex-Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson could be the franchise’s next captain.

Gaikwad’s two-year tenure has failed to deliver a top‑four finish, while his own batting form has dipped alarmingly. In contrast, Samson has quietly built a solid captaincy resume at Rajasthan.

As chatter around a possible leadership change grows louder, let’s take a look at the detailed statistical comparison of the two CSK players ahead of IPL 2027.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s CSK captaincy record reflects mediocrity

Ruturaj Gaikwad took over the CSK captaincy in 2024 with the near‑impossible brief of stepping into MS Dhoni’s shoes. Across his two full seasons at the helm, the numbers make for sober reading.

In 32 IPL matches as CSK captain, Gaikwad has managed 14 wins against 18 losses, a win/loss ratio of just 0.777. The team has never reached the playoffs under his leadership, and 2026 has been particularly grim. CSK are mathematically alive but relying on multiple results to go their way.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s individual returns as captain in the IPL have been modest. He has scored 1,026 runs in 32 CSK captaincy innings at an average of 38.00 with one century.

That average, while respectable, masks a steep decline in 2026. In the current season he managed only 321 runs at 29.18 with a strike rate of 120.68, well below the modern T20 benchmark.

Looking at his wider captaincy career across all T20s, the trend is similar. In 54 matches as captain, including domestic games, he averages 40.17, but his 2026 IPL numbers alone dragged that down significantly.

Gaikwad has performed brilliantly as a pure batter

Interestingly, Gaikwad’s non‑captaincy IPL numbers are nearly identical. He averages 39.06 in 52 matches, indicating that leadership has not lifted his batting.

He also shows a notable home‑away split as captain. At home, he averages a commanding 59.11, but that drops to 26.11 away from familiar Chepauk conditions.

Sanju Samson’s IPL captaincy record: Not exceptional, but not too bad either

Sanju Samson has led Rajasthan Royals since 2021, and while his tenure has not been trophy‑laden, it has been markedly more stable than Gaikwad’s.

In 67 IPL matches as RR captain, Samson has 33 wins, 32 losses, one tie and one no‑result, translating to a win/loss ratio of 1.031. Under Sanju Samson, RR have consistently fought for playoff spots and have twice made the knockout rounds.

Samson’s batting as captain has also shown an upward trajectory. In the IPL alone, he averages 36.08 as captain with a high score of 119.

When his entire captaincy record across formats is considered, 105 matches, his average rises to 36.63 with nearly 3,114 runs. Crucially, he has performed better with the extra responsibility than without it.

Samson's performance not as a captain: What do the numbers indicate?

As a non‑captain in the IPL, Samson averaged just 29.81 from 123 innings. The captaincy seems to have brought a new layer of focus and maturity to his game.

Samson’s recent form strengthens his case further. In the 2025 and 2026 domestic and IPL seasons, his captaincy average has stayed healthy, 46.55 in 2025 and a handy 58.25 in the small sample of early 2026 domestic matches.

He has also been more consistent in home and away conditions, averaging 35.61 at home and 37.95 away as captain, a far more balanced spread than Gaikwad’s heavy home reliance.

Tactical and Batting Differences Between Samson And Gaikwad

As captain, Gaikwad thrives when CSK bat first. His average in those matches is 47.34, and his team’s wins often come from setting totals.

When chasing, however, his average drops to 30.36, and CSK’s record while fielding first has been poor.

Samson, by contrast, is a better second‑innings captain, averaging 39.87 when fielding first and 33.61 when batting first. This suggests Samson is more able at managing a chase, a crucial requirement in the game.

Team numbers also tell a story. CSK under Gaikwad have scored at a marginally higher rate, 9.15 runs per over compared to RR’s 8.86 under Samson, but they concede more and win fewer games.

RR’s slightly lower scoring rate is offset by smarter in‑game management, resulting in a superior win/loss ratio. Samson’s RR side has consistently punched around the 50% win mark, while Gaikwad’s CSK have slipped below it.

Conclusion: Who Is Better?

Given CSK’s philosophy of stable leadership, changing a captain is a huge call, but the numbers lend weight to a different view.

Samson is a proven IPL captain with over five years of experience and a better win/loss record. He would inherit a team in transition, but one that still possesses match‑winners.

Gaikwad have technically lost his chance to prove in IPL 2026 and would have to look forward to the next season.

Without a drastic turnaround in 2027, the calls for a leadership change will only intensify; however, now, the statistical edge belongs firmly to Sanju Samson.
