CSK qualification scenario explained [Source: AFP]
SRH have breathed a massive sigh of relief as the visitors defeated CSK in a nail-biter to seal their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs. The Orange Army won the game by 5 wickets, and that win also ensured GT's qualification in the next round.
A Pat Cummins masterclass with the ball, followed by a match-winning fifty from Ishan Kishan helped the visiting side win this crucial IPL 2026 contest. With this win, CSK's IPL 2026 qualification hangs in jeopardy.
CSK Vs SRH- As it happened
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and he elected to bat first on a lively wicket. Sanju Samson gave them a flying start with a quickfire 27, but Pat Cummins took his important wicket.
Urvil Patel soon followed Samson back into the hut before Gaikwad, and Kartik Sharma forged a partnership. While Sharma was the aggressor, the CSK skipper struggled for runs and departed for a painstaking 21-ball 15.
Kartik scored 32 off 19 balls, and he laid the foundation for a finishing flurry as Dewald Brevis, who has been woefully out of touch, joined the fun and slammed 44 off 27 balls. Shivam Dube also scored 26 off 23 as CSK posted a commanding 180/7. In reply, SRH had a horrendous start, losing both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma cheaply.
Once SRH lost two wickets, Ishan Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen resurrected the sinking ship with a clinical partnership. While Klaasen was the aggressor, Kishan took the second fiddle role to frustrate the CSK bowlers.
Klaasen scored a gritty 47 before Samson stumped him. Once the Proteas batter departed, Kishan took the centre stage as he smashed a brilliant fifty under immense pressure and steered SRH to a crucial IPL win.

CSK remaining matches: (GT) away fixture
CSK’s defeat means two teams (SRH and GT) have officially qualified for the IPL playoffs. RCB became the first team to reach the knockouts, and that leaves just one spot to be taken.
For CSK to take that last spot, they have no other choice but to beat the GT side, and hope that other results go in their way, including defeats for RR, PBKS and KKR, so that no team reaches more than 14 points.
With this loss, CSK have slipped to 6th, and they need to beat the Titans by a big margin to improve their net run-rate -0.016, and qualify for the playoffs.
How CSK have fared in IPL 2026 so far
CSK were one of the favourites to win the IPL 2026 after signing Sanju Samson, and two talented youngsters, Prashant Veer, and Kartik Sharma. However, things went downhill right before the tournament as their legend, MS Dhoni sustained a calf injury.
Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK started their IPL 2026 journey with three back-to-back losses. RR, PBKS, and RCB gave them a one-sided drubbing as the side looked underconfident within the first three games.
The franchise witnessed a mini turnaround as they won back-to-back matches by defeating DC and KKR. SRH then gave them a reality check as CSK lost a close-fought contest. The side then bounced back with a win in the El Clásico against the Mumbai Indians before crumbling in front of the Gujarat Titans.
It was then followed by three successive victories as MI, DC, and LSG became CSK’s victims. LSG, however, took revenge in the last match by defeating the Super Kings at the Ekana.
