South Africa was humbled and humiliated by New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals on Wednesday. It was expected to be a competitive match, but the Kiwi openers, Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, turned it into a run-fest as they hammered the Proteas attack and won the game by 9 wickets.

South Africa was the only unbeaten team in the T20 World Cup semis, but that run ended on a tragic note as the team once again crashed out despite playing brilliant cricket throughout the tournament.

With yet another World Cup campaign ending without a trophy, several South African players are on the firing line, and could potentially take retirement from the T20 format. Here are 4 such Proteas cricketers who can take this harsh call after the defeat against the Kiwis.

1) David Miller

Arguably South Africa’s biggest clutch player in the ICC knockouts, David Miller always delivers the goods for the Proteas, but unfortunately, he couldn’t do it against the Kiwis in the semis. The batter has been prolific for the Proteas in white-ball cricket, but perhaps the time has come for “Killer Miller” to bid adieu to the format.

Miller is currently 36, and the next T20 World Cup will be two years down the line, when he’ll be 38. Perhaps, the South African side should rebuild their T20 squad with younger players in the middle-order, and for that, Miller might have to sacrifice his position.

He can still go strong in patches, but at 38, he might not have the legs to play T20 cricket.

2) Keshav Maharaj

Keshav Maharaj has been a stalwart for South African cricket across formats, but the left-arm spinner has looked a pale shadow of his former self in the T20 World Cup, and with George Linde, a like-for-like replacement available, Maharaj could permanently make way for him.

(Keshav Maharaj in T20 WC 2026)

  • Just 5 wickets in six matches, with an average of 38 define Maharaj’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey. His economy was also on the higher side (8.52), as the Proteas lacked his wicket-taking ability in the tournament.
  • He was taken to the cleaners in almost every game, and Maharaj hardly looked at his best against the opponents.
  • Linde is there as a solid replacement, and perhaps, Maharaj should quit the format to focus on his red-ball journey.

3) Quinton de Kock

A lot was expected of Quinton de Kock in the World Cup as the opener entered the tournament on the back of a stellar run. However, he was their biggest disappointment and the stats reveal the entire story.

(De Kock in T20 WC)

  • While de Kock’s opening partner, Aiden Markram, scored truckloads of runs in the World Cup, the southpaw struggled as he could only rack up 181 runs in eight matches, with a strike rate of 135.
  • He failed in the all-important semis against the Kiwis, and at 33, he is not getting any younger. Perhaps the team could promote Ryan Rickelton to open alongside Markram, and put someone else at number 3. His batting was exposed in the T20 World Cup, and the team could do with an upgrade in the top order.

4) Anrich Nortje

Nortje could call time on his T20I career not due to his performances, but because of the number of injuries he has suffered in the past. In the last few years, the tearaway pacer has been rocked with multiple injuries, which has kept him on the sidelines.

He is still 32, but the Proteas bowler looks a pale shadow of his former self, and he could call time on his journey due to the injuries that has hampered his glorious career.
