On Wednesday, March 4, New Zealand fans were on cloud nine after the Kiwis hammered South Africa to enter 2nd T20 World Cup final. Besides the Blackcaps, KKR fans were delighted with what they saw at the Eden Gardens because it was a Tim Seifert and Finn Allen masterclass that guided New Zealand to the final.

Seifert and Finn Allen stitched an unbeaten 117 run-stand that took the match away from the Proteas. For the unversed, KKR bought the duo at the IPL 2026 auction at a combined price of 3.50 crores. The fans are excited because the Kiwi openers are in stellar form, and they are all set to don the KKR jersey from March 28.

Tim Seifert and Finn Allen Having a Tournament of a lifetime

Tim Seifert and Finn Allen have been the best performers for New Zealand in this edition as they have amassed 463 runs, which is the most by a pair in World Cup history. Here is the complete list.

* 463 - 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻/𝗧𝗶𝗺 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘁 (2026)*

* 446 - R Gurbaz/Ibrahim Zadran (2024)

* 411 - Babar Azam/Mohd Rizwan (2021)

* 368 - Jos Buttler/Alex Hales (2022)

* 335 - Adam Gilchrist/Matthew Hayden (2007)

* 321 - Rohit Sharma/KL Rahul (2021)

It is the second time in this edition that Seifert and Allen have stitched a 100+ runs stand. Notably, the duo had amassed 175 runs against the UAE in Chennai. Despite the success, KKR have a huge dilemma in front of them. Only four overseas players are allowed to be in the playing XI, and bringing two overseas stars as openers would disrupt KKR’s combination.

KKR’s IPL 2026 Squad And Ideal Combination

KKR Squad: Ajinkya Rahane, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Anukul Roy, Harshit Rana, Manish Pandey, Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, Umran Malik, Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakaravarthy, Cameron Green, Finn Allen, Matheesha Pathirana, Tejasvi Singh, Kartik Tyagi, Prashant Solanki, Rahul Tripathi, Tim Seifert, Mustafizur Rahman, Sarthak Ranjan, Daksh Kamra, Rachin Ravindra, Akash Deep

Four possible overseas options: Ideally, KKR will start with Sunil Narine, who has been their best-overseas star since 2012. Talking about his IPL 2025 performance, the star all-rounder scored 246 runs in 12 innings and 12 wickets. Therefore, it will be difficult for KKR to bench him.

Another area where KKR require an overseas option is their seam bowling. Harshit Rana is presently injured, Mustafizur Rahman has been released from the squad, and rest of the bowlers like Umran Malik and Vaibhav Arora are having a disastrous domestic campaign.

Therefore, the role of Matheesha Pathirana increases, and the Knight Riders bought him for a whopping 18 crores, not to be benched. Similarly, KKR’s top buy was Cameron Green, whom they roped in for 25.20 crores, and he will play as well.

Hence, with Cameron Green, Sunil Narine and Matheesha Pathirana’s place fixed in the playing XI, then KKR can only play either Tim Seifert or Finn Allen in the team. Here is KKR's probable XI with just Tim Seifert in it.

KKR's probable playing XI: Tim Seifert (wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rahul Tripathi, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, Matheesha Pathirana

How can KKR fit Tim Seifert and Finn Allen together in the playing XI?

For KKR to fit both Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, they need to trust their Indian seamers a lot more, which would allow them to bench Matheesha Pathirana. In that case, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen will open.

KKR will have to rely on Umran Malik and Vaibhav Arora to do the job. Further, Cameron Green will have to bowl and fill the gap in the bowling department. Here is KKR's strongest XI with Seifert and Finn Allen in it.

KKR's strongest playing XI: Tim Seifert (wk), Finn Allen, Ajinkya Rahane, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora

It is a simple scenario for KKR, if they want the Kiwi openers to play, then Matheesha Pathirana will have to pay the price.
