Nuwan Thushara, the Sri Lankan pacer, was set to be RCB’s key weapon in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, and with Josh Hazlewood missing the initial few IPL matches due to an injury, Thushara was expected to play a key role in his absence.

However, disaster struck when the Sri Lankan pacer failed to meet the fitness test criteria set by the Sri Lankan cricket board, and thus, he was not given an NOC to participate in the IPL 2026.

As a result, midway through the IPL campaign, the defending champions decided to replace the Sri Lankan seamer with England pacer Richard Gleeson. The right-arm bowler impressed in his short stint in PSL 2026, and as a result, the franchise decided to rope him in.

Gleeson, not the only PSL star roped in by an IPL franchise

Interestingly, Richard Gleeson was not the only PSL star roped in midway through the season, as another player caught the eye of an IPL side.

South African player, Dian Forrester, was drafted in by the Chennai Super Kings as a replacement player for the injured Jamie Overton, and the franchise spent 75 lakhs to acquire his services for the remainder of the IPL 2026.

The all-rounder featured for the RawalPindiz in the PSL 2026, and despite the side failing to deliver the goods, Forrester showcased his class and was the team’s best batter by a country mile.

Two players who performed exceedingly well in the PSL were called upon as replacement players. So, the question arises: why has the IPL suddenly gone the PSL way, and has picked the two players, when they had the chance to look somewhere else?

All players IPL have scouted from PSL

This has become a trend in recent years that every time a player gets injured, instead of replacing them with local talent, the IPL buys players from the rival T20 league, the PSL.

Last year, it was Corbin Bosch, who jumped ship and was signed by the Mumbai Indians as a replacement player. This season, Forrester will join the Super Kings, while another cricketer who impressed in the PSL, Gleeson, has been roped in by the RCB.

There were also two players who had already signed PSL contracts with their respective franchises, Dasun Shanaka and Blessing Muzarabani, but when IPL came calling, the duo ditched the PSL.

Why PSL-bound players become IPL's dream target?

  • IPL has become a ten-team tournament, and that means the league requires more talent to flourish, but it seems India is lacking talented players, as the IPL franchises tend to look overseas when searching for a replacement.
  • All the PSL-bound players, who have recently signed with IPL sides, registered their names in the mini auction, but they were all rejected as IPL franchises showed no interest in them. However, midway through the season, when the teams were hit with emergency injuries, they pressed the panic button and brought the same players they once rejected.
  • In terms of competitiveness, PSL is two steps below the IPL, and thus, when overseas stars are recruited in the Pakistan Super League, and they perform exceedingly well, IPL franchises feel they have missed out on a quality cricketer.
  • Take, for example, Gleeson and Forrester; the two haven’t done anything for the national team, but they were impressive for their PSL sides, and thus, they became IPL’s target.
  • Gleeson has 9 wickets in 6 T20I games for England, meanwhile, Forrester, who was touted as the next big thing, has just accumulated 83 runs in five T20I matches for the Proteas.

Have IPL scouts given up on local talent to replace the injured stars?

There are so many quality players hidden in the Indian domestic circuit, but it seems the IPL scouts have given up on local talents, and instead of finding a diamond in India, they rope in players from PSL, a league that sits below the IPL.

The quality of cricket in the PSL is below that of the Indian T20 league, and IPL scouts get trapped when overseas players perform in Pakistan. Instead of taking players from the PSL, the Indian league should find gems from the domestic circuit.
