Jasprit Bumrah captained Mumbai Indians (MI) against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 14, 2026, in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) tournament. This was because both main captain Hardik Pandya and vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav had not traveled with the team to Dharamshala.

Bumrah won the toss and asked the Punjab Kings to bat first. PBKS got off to a great start as Priyansh Arya (22) and Prabhsimran Singh (57) faced the bowlers. Cooper Conolly struck 21, but MI recovered thanks to Xavier Bartlett (18*), Vishnu Vinod (15), and Azmatullah Omarzai (38), allowing PBKS to reach 200/8 in 20 overs.

MI registered a brilliant win thanks to Tilak Varma; PBKS suffers its fifth straight loss

Rohit Sharma battled for rhythm, reaching 25 in 26 balls, while Ryan Rickelton hammered 48 in 23 balls with four sixes and four fours. Sherfane Rutherford (20) and Naman Dhir (4) accompanied Tilak Varma as he helped MI go closer to a certain victory.

After joining Varma, Will Jacks smashed 25* in ten balls with two fours and two sixes. However, Tilak Varma's outstanding effort of 75* in 33 balls with six fours and six sixes allowed MI to score 50 runs in the last 18 balls.

While Xavier Bartlett failed to stop 15 runs in the last over, Marco Jansen scored 22 runs in the 18th over alongside Varma and Jacks.

Jasprit Bumrah captains MI for the first time

This match marked the debut of Jasprit Bumrah as MI captain. The 32-year-old pacer becomes only the 10th player to captain MI, marking a personal milestone with his first-ever appearance as captain in the tournament.

Hardik Pandya missed the game because of a back spasm, which prompted the development. Suryakumar Yadav, who had previously captained the team in Hardik's absence but did not travel to Dharamshala for personal reasons, was also absent for Mumbai.

For the Mumbai Indians, who were eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru earlier this week, the match itself has little bearing.

Jasprit Bumrah compares his one-off MI captaincy to Anil Kapoor’s Nayak movie

Jasprit Bumrah is not new to captaincy. He has captained India in a handful of Tests and T20Is. He was in contention to become India’s full-time Test captain once Rohit Sharma retired but backed out of the race after suffering a reoccurrence of his back injury during India’s tour of Australia in 2024-25.

Bumrah has developed into one of the Mumbai Indians' most significant players since joining the team in 2013, contributing significantly to all five IPL championship wins. The Baroda pacer has played for MI in 156 IPL matches, taking 186 wickets at an economy rate of 7.33.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah revealed that he has no intentions of becoming a full-time captain for the Mumbai Indians, as he compared his one-off captaincy with Anil Kapoor’s ‘Nayak’ movie. Notably, Anil Kapoor played a common man in that movie who becomes Maharashtra CM for one day.

Mumbai Indians' journey in IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians had come into the IPL 2026 with huge hopes after reaching the playoff in the IPL 2025. Hardik Pandya was on a high after winning his second T20 World Cup earlier this year. However, the season didn’t pan out the way they had thought.

The MI franchise just couldn’t string together enough wins to stay in contention for the playoffs. They won a game and then lost 2-3 games in a row and, hence, became the second team to be eliminated from the race for the playoffs. Despite winning against Punjab, MI are in 9th spot with 4 wins from 12 games and 8 points to their name.
