The Chennai Super Kings assembled a strong core for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, but even before a single delivery has been bowled, the franchise has suffered two major jolts with Nathan Ellis ruled out of the entire tournament, and batter Matthew Short set to miss the initial few matches with a fractured thumb.

Short is expected to be back for the second half of the IPL 2026, but the Yellow Army will certainly miss the services of Nathan Ellis, who was touted to start for them in the playing XI.

Ellis’s slower balls would have been useful on the slower Chepauk wickets, but with the Aussie pacer ruled out, CSK’s playing combination has been disrupted. The team needs to rejig their plans, and with key players out, here are the four foreigners CSK could field in their playing XI.

CSK's overseas options for IPL 2026

1) Dewald Brevis

CSK’s biggest hope of winning their sixth IPL title, Dewald Brevis, will hold the key for the Super Kings in the upcoming season. Last year, the franchise replaced the injured Gurjapneet Singh with Brevis for the second half of IPL, and the move turned out to be a masterstroke.

(Brevis in IPL 2025)

  • He played just six matches and scored 225 runs, with a strike rate of 180, and left a lasting impression on the CSK management. So much so that the team retained him for IPL 2026, and he should be the first name on the team sheet.
  • Brevis can bat at multiple positions for CSK- he can be used at number 3, 4, and 5, and this flexibility is the main reason why the franchise looks confident to win yet another IPL title.

2) Jamie Overton

Jamie Overton, the English all-rounder, might not be a big name, but there is a reason MS Dhoni’s CSK showed trust in him. He is a deceptive bowler who is quick through the air, and if needed, can also bowl slower deliveries, which can be useful on the slower Chepauk wickets.

Last season, he was not at his best, but in the T20 World Cup in India this year, Overton bowled well, and could be used as someone who can take wickets in the middle-overs. Moreover, the English bowler is also a handy lower-order batter and can chip in with quick-fire runs.

3) Noor Ahmad

Eyebrows were raised when CSK went hard to purchase Afghan mystery spinner, Noor Ahmad in the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, the move paid off as the spinner became CSK’s undisputed starter and grabbed 24 wickets (the second-most), and single-handedly kept CSK alive in most of the matches.

With Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin in the CSK team, last year, Noor displaced them both and became their main bowler. Once again at the Chepauk, the former IPL winners would hope that he can deliver the goods, especially without the seniors unavailable (Ashwin, and Jadeja).

4) Matt Henry

Nathan Ellis was a sure-shot starter for CSK as he was clearly their best overseas bowler. However, his injury has left a huge void, but luckily, the franchise has two solid options to choose from- Matt Henry, and Zak Foulkes.

However, Henry brings a plethora of experience and is also a proven match-winner. Alongside Khaleel Ahmed, Henry can be a brilliant bowler inside the powerplay, and certainly for the start of the IPL 2026, the CSK squad could be looking at Henry as the first-choice overseas pacer.
