A venerable jack of all trades, Lendl Simmons is a professional cricketer for the Men in Maroon who is a dynamic top-order batsman and a fantastic fielder. He is one of the most promising openers that West Indies cricket has produced in the modern times
Simmons was first picked for the West Indies at the age of 21 in 2006 for the ODI series against Pakistan. He fell for a duck on debut, but bounced back with 70 in the next ODI and booked his spot for the ICC World Cup 2007 in the Caribbean.
Simmons is highly innovative in the shortest format of the game. He became the first batsman to score a century in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 followed by a tremendous time at Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in the same year, where he emerged as the man of the tournament.
Unfortunately for Simmons, he played the innings of his life in a match that perhaps no one would remember. Coming in at No. 3, he smashed 282 off 381 balls for West Indies A against England XI in a tour game. The Trinidadian scored his maiden century against Bangladesh at Dhaka striking 122 runs in the famous away victory.
Simmons played a brief but vital role in West Indies' title run at the 2016 World T20. Ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury, he bounced back in the semi-finals against India scoring an unbeaten 81 off 52 deliveries at his IPL home ground, and steered the Men in Maroon to the finals of the World T20 which eventually West Indies won.
While Simmons’ numbers do not reflect the talent, there is still promise for brighter times ahead. However, he may finish as a limited-overs player as his Test performances have been dismal so far.
