The West Indies Champions have registered their first win of the season. However, they are in fifth place in the points table. Meanwhile, despite today's loss, the England Champions are still at the top with two wins from three games.
Tomorrow is a break but on Friday (October 9) we have another double-header. Australia Champions will take on South Africa Champions in the afternoon game while Bangladesh Champions will face off against West Indies Champions in the evening fixture of the day.
The West Indies Champions kick off the competition with a ‘W’ on the back of dominating performance across the three dimensions. A fitting birthday gift to the Champion DJ Bravo, who turns 43 today. The Windies will be eyeing to continue the same zeal in the field while the English side will be regrouping to bounce back.
Chris Gayle (West Indies Champions Captain):"(Nice to meet you, champions. We're just doing our first victory. Happy? Crispier? Universe Boss?) Yeah, very happy to be on the points table, to be on the slew. We needed that after the first game, so, you know, turn one against South Africa to actually come and rebound here against England. It's been fantastic, so hopefully we can actually get some momentum and build up this. Yeah, the partnership between Chadwick Walton and Lendl Simmons, especially in the powerplay, they've just set up the run.
(That's freaking awesome. Absolutely, but I want to give credit to the bowlers. How good was the birthday boy [DJ Bravo]?) Yeah happy birthday bravo they did a fantastic job you know they started really well I mean you know just so I got off a little bit there but I'm sort of begging back and then you know in the last thing I was as well trying to get away as well with that chance and then you know capitalize on this chance but in the end we'll wait until I thought 150 was at this year total to actually you know restricting the court yeah was there a conscious effort for their plans in case.
(Did you have a hard time with the guys, especially with Fidel at one of the lines and with the ball to these guys?) No, not really. These guys know these guys so well, so I don't need to actually find them. We are bowling up against, so they should actually know the game. I know they play the game against such a player as well, so it was actually pretty much.
(Are you going to get a better celebration for the birthday boy?) Yeah, tomorrow we're going to celebrate Victor's birthday, brother. But we're going to end our sequence as well. It's good, you know, everybody actually gets to end the groove. Happy birthday, Bravo. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. Alright, thank you so much. Please wish Ethan Brown from all of our sides wishing him a happy birthday. "
Ravi Bopara (England Champions captain):"(On the loss tonight) It wasn't a great night for us. But you can't win them all. At this stage of the competition, you win the first couple, you get a loss at this stage, and hopefully, you finish off strong. Hopefully we'll kick on from here.
(Mood in the camp?) It wasn't my day today, I thought Moeen Ali played really well today. To come in and play on this surface, the way he played was encouraging for us. It's a shame that no one batted through today and got us up to a total sort of 180-190. That was the kind of total we could have defended.
(Was that the total that should be an average score here?) Absolutely. Regardless of the wicket, you're looking at a minimum of 180-plus, 200-plus, 220, especially here in Sharjah.
(On the five-day break up ahead) Yeah, we've got a five-day break. That never happens in any competition! The boys will enjoy this, they'll get some rest. Some of these boys are old, they can get some rest, recover and come back strong for the next game."
Lendl Simmons (Player of the Match):"(Was there a conscious effort to try and literally capitalize the power play? Try and get as many on the board as possible?) Yeah, I think we needed to maximize the power play, but at the same time not lose too much of the game. But seeing that we had a good power play, we went on to win the game.
(Well, how's the morale and the mood in the camp?) It's much better than last game, seeing that we lost pretty badly last game. But seeing that we had a win this game, you guys are very strong. What's that goal?"
