Gerald Coetzee is a talented fast-bowling all-rounder from the land of Allan Donald. He is a hit-the-deck kind of pacer who troubles the batters with his lethal lengths and bounce off any surface. Additionally, he is an explosive lower-order batter.
The Bloemfontein-born started playing the sport in the backyard under the guidance of his older brother. As he grew, his likeness turned into love and he was selected to play for Free State Under 13s.
On the back of age-group performances, the selectors picked a 17-year-old Coetzee for the U19 World Cup held in New Zealand in 2018, where he played four games and scalped six wickets and scored 70 crucial runs. The all-rounder played a couple more games in the next edition of the ICC event.
In between the two World Cups, a lot happened with Coetzee, the all-rounder was picked by the Knights team to make his domestic debut. He made his List A debut in the 2018–19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge and made his Twenty20 debut in the 2018–19 CSA T20 Challenge.
He made his first-class debut in the 2019–20 CSA 4-Day Franchise Series. Coetzee gained a lot of experience after playing domestically. In 2020, he represented the Kingfishers team during CSA’s invented 3-Team Cricket format.
During the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Rajasthan Royals bagged the South African as a replacement for Liam Livingstone, but Coetzee didn’t feature in any game as the edition got suspended after the bubble breach mishap.
In June 2022, he earned his maiden call-up to South Africa's T20I squad for their tour of England and Ireland, marking the beginning of his international career. His Test debut followed in February 2023 against the West Indies, where he showcased his potential as a fast bowler. The same year, in March, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against the West Indies, impressing with a three-wicket haul in his first game.
Coetzee’s breakthrough moment came during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Selected for his maiden World Cup at the age of 23, he stepped up as one of South Africa's key pacers due to injuries to senior bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala. He became a vital asset in the Proteas' pace attack, excelling in the middle overs and ending the tournament as South Africa's leading wicket-taker with 20 wickets in eight matches.
His standout performances made him one of the breakout stars of the tournament, and he also became the highest wicket-taker for South Africa in a single World Cup edition after claiming his 18th wicket in the group stage match against Afghanistan.
In franchise cricket, Coetzee gained further recognition when he joined the Texas Super Kings for the inaugural season of Major League Cricket in June 2023. He had also expressed interest in playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
However, in the 2024 IPL auction, Mumbai Indians secured him for INR 5 crore, providing him with his first opportunity in the Indian Premier League. The following year, in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, he was picked up by the Gujarat Titans for INR 2.40 crore.
Coetzee continued to be a key figure in South African cricket, earning a spot in the national squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. However, his momentum was disrupted in early 2025 when he suffered a hamstring strain during the SA20 league. The injury ruled him out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, marking a significant setback in his international career.
Despite the challenges, Coetzee remains one of South Africa's most exciting fast-bowling prospects, with his raw pace and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations making him a valuable asset in all formats of the game.
