The Proteas finished the night with the momentum and a 1-0 lead in the series. Now, the caravan will move to Johannesburg for the second ODI, which is scheduled for Sunday, 27th September.
This was a match that seemed to be Australia’s to lose after Marsh’s assault, and that is precisely what happened. The visitors were magnificent for the first 10 overs and had the chase firmly under control, but the execution deteriorated once South Africa changed the rhythm of the innings. Maharaj, Fortuin and Jansen kept the pressure building, while the Proteas backed their bowlers superbly in the field. The result was a 67-run victory, with South Africa defending 297 despite Australia reaching 96/1 inside the opening 10 overs.
Temba Bavuma (South Africa Captain): "(How happy he is) Yeah, very satisfying, Pommie. Overall, it was a good effort from our batters as well as our bowlers. Looking at how both innings panned out in the first 10 overs, they managed to put us under pressure but we managed get ourselves to a competitive score on that wicket. Similarly, in our bowling innings, we stuck in and managed to get in the right side of the result.

(Expectations coming into this game) I think I was hopeful to win the toss. So, that was the first thing. As a batting unit, I knew it was going to be tough. We had to adapt to the conditions out there. They were hitting those Test lengths hard. We tried to fight, stayed in the game. Matthew Breetzke showed tremendous character, and we all appreciate that. Marco Jansen added some punches down the order which got us to a good total. Similarly, with the ball, they got us under pressure. We expect the Australians to play like that. The challenge is always to make sure that the body language is always positive. We waited for the opportunities in order to turn it into our favour.

(On the two spinners who bowled so well) Yeah, we probably lacked a bit of experience, at least at this level. On saying that, you got guys who have strong desire to do it for the team. They are very hungry to perform for the team. Fortunately, we have a guy like Keshav in the spin department, who kind of helps our bowling attack. We have a guy like Fortuin, who has wealth of experience. I think that kind of balances it out. All in all, we kind of managed it quite well.

(Different conditions in the 2nd ODI at Jo'burg) Different conditions, yes. We will see what Wanderers has for us. And of course, we are looking forward to the Pink Day, us in pink and also playing for the good cause which is breast cancer."
Mitchell Marsh (Australia Captain): (On the defeat) "Oh yeah, pretty disappointed. We felt outplayed. I think we got 100 runs off the first ten overs. Good game of cricket, but yeah, we fell well short tonight.

(On South Africa reaching nearly 300) Yeah, we sort of know that's the way that they tend to play. They like to build in their 50 overs and go hard in the last 10-15. We pushed to try and get that extra couple of wickets there, and it didn't quite go our way. I thought Breetzke and Jansen batted very well. It was hard to bowl to, particularly with that short boundary. So credit where credit's due. They did well to get 300 on that wicket, and then obviously we had our opportunities.

(On Australia's batting collapse after a strong start) Yeah, look, we managed to get the run rate down, and from there, as I said, it was about forming partnerships. We knew Maharaj and Fortuin were going to be key for them in the way that we played them. Unfortunately, we weren't able to execute enough for long periods of time. But that's the way it goes. I think it's good learning. It's a great opportunity for us if we come up against that in game two to learn from this and get better and try and make it one-all.

(On the conditions in the next game) Yeah, look, I'm a little bit unsure of how that wicket's playing these days. It's been a while for me. But as a batter, I know the ball travels, and as someone who doesn't bowl anymore, it's quite nice going out there."
Matthew Breetzke (Player of the Match): "(Has he reflected back on his innings yet?) Not really, to be very honest, Pom.

(Where would he rank his innings today?) Yeah, right up there. It was very tricky early on out there. We were losing wickets at the other end against a world class bowling attack. I really had to dig deep. It took a lot out of me mentally but just grateful that I managed to get the hundred and batted through.

(Discussions with his teammates on the conditions) The chat was to play nice and straight. When you play square, like you saw a couple of guys getting leading edges, it was a surface to play straight.

(On his partnership with Jansen) Ya, if you look at Jansen in general. When he is at his best, he looks to attack. So, I don't think it was a necessary plan. He got one away and then he just continued with the momentum and I was happy to feed him strike.

(How was it batting at Number 4 and getting a hundred) Well, obviously, I have been batting at Number 4 for the last year or so. So, I am getting used to that role now. I think the celebration was more towards that it was so tough early on. I had to fight myself out there. It was a great feeling."
