Potential Changes India Could Make For England T20Is After Ireland Whitewash

Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer, the pair that helped KKR win the IPL 2024 title, India suffered possibly the most humiliating T20I series defeat on Sunday. Only months after winning the T20 World Cup trophy, they lost to Ireland with a 0-2 scoreline, marking a forgettable debut for Shreyas as India’s full-time captain.

There has been a lot of criticism around India’s T20I squad for Ireland, particularly because the batting unit collectively did not fire in any of the outings in Belfast.

Now, with the high-voltage five-match T20I series in England coming up, starting from as early as July 1 onwards, there are some changes India must definitely make if they want to seek redemption immediately after the humiliation.

Sanju Samson Out, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi In

Even though the indications from the Indian camp have not been great for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, it would be the loss for the BCCI if they keep on benching the wonderkid who is arguably the most-talked-about cricketer in the world.

Yes, Sanju Samson played a vital role in India winning the T20 World Cup 2026, but if the consistency does not happen on the cricket field, it would be unfair for someone as explosive as Sooryavanshi to be sidelined.

Against an Irish attack which did not have Mark Adair either, all Samson could make was four-ball five and a golden duck. Surely, India must not wait to launch Sooryavanshi any further after Samson’s two miserable outings.

Axar Patel Out, Varun Chakaravarthy In

In Ireland, India dearly missed Varun Chakaravarthy, who was ruled out of the series for a left foot injury. Back then, he was in the final stages of the rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) and should be fully fit during India vs England T20Is.

Having conceded 61 runs off his combined eight overs for two wickets, Axar did alright with the ball in Ireland. However, he failed to impress with the bat, with 16-ball 15 and 18-ball 14 speaking volumes.

With India already having a good depth in batting, Varun, the second-ranked T20I bowler in the world, can easily get a place for Axar. That would give their bowling attack more sharpness.

Tilak Varma Out, Washington Sundar In

Vice-captains do have to make way for others in Indian cricket, and the likes of Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, and Rishabh Pant were at the receiving end of late. Don’t be surprised if Tilak Varma, who has been named India’s new deputy under Shreyas Iyer in T20Is, gets the same fate in the near future.

Now, with Varun potentially coming back, Gambhir might look into more multi-dimensional options, with Washington Sundar among the limited cover in India’s T20I squad vs England.

Even though Sundar has been very poor with the Indian jersey despite playing for so long in T20Is, a player who can bowl as well will help Shreyas to rotate his troops.

Nevertheless, Sundar might not get a place either, as Tilak did make a hard-fought 46-ball 55 against Ireland in the second T20I. He might eventually get dropped, but not as quickly as in the first T20I against England.
