Cricket is returning to the Olympics at the Los Angeles 2028 Games after last appearing at the 1900 Paris Olympics, and the ICC has created a qualification system for the six-team men’s and women’s T20 tournaments.

However, the surprising part is that the USA, despite hosting the Olympics, will not automatically qualify in the women’s event. This is a huge setback for the hosts, as they were earlier believed to receive straight entry.

USA Women’s Olympic 2028 berth jeopardised

The women’s cricket tournament of the LA Olympics 2028 will have 6 teams, with India, Australia, South Africa and England are expected to qualify from their regions.

The remaining two spots will be decided based on rankings after future tournaments, and one through a global qualifier. Normally, hosts get automatic Olympic qualification.

But cricket is different. According to Code Sports, the ICC and IOC decided qualification should be competitive, and the USA women’s team is currently ranked around 20th in the world.

Officials believe they may not be competitive enough, and hence, a stronger cricket nation should take the spot. So, despite hosting the Olympics, the USA women may miss out on playing at home.

Australia’s qualification gets trickier

Just like the women’s game, the men’s tournament in the LA Olympics 2028 will also have 6 teams. The qualification will mainly be based on ICC T20I rankings with regional representation.

Again, India, South Africa, England and host USA are likely to qualify. However, the USA will only stand a chance to play if they remain inside the top 15 of the ICC rankings.

Now, from the East Asia-Pacific region, either Australia or New Zealand could qualify. Australia are currently ahead after recently beating Bangladesh 3-0. However, New Zealand isn't far behind either.

They will play India in a five-match T20I series, and Australia will play England in a five-match T20I series. These two series could change the rankings and eventually decide the fate of the two teams.

West Indies not recognised by the ICC

Interestingly, the West Indies have been excluded from the qualification process despite being in the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings. Apparently, the Windies are not an IOC-recognised country/team because they represent multiple Caribbean nations.

Therefore, they cannot directly qualify as "West Indies", and the Caribbean teams will compete through regional qualifications. The winner of a Caribbean regional tournament will get a chance through the global qualifier.

Overall, the ICC is using the LA Olympics 2028 as a major opportunity to expand cricket beyond traditional markets.

With only six teams allowed in each competition, the race for LA 2028 qualification could become one of the most competitive battles in international cricket.
