Saransh Jain has earned his maiden call-up for the national team as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel announced the India vs Sri Lanka Test squad. The series, which is set to kick off in the middle of August, now sees Saransh, a name probably only a few would have heard, in the Test squad.

For the unaware, Saransh Jain earned his India call-up due to the rule-out of all-rounder Washington Sundar due to a hamstring injury he has been struggling with. Now, Ajit Agarkar and Co. thought of Jain as the perfect replacement option for Sundar, but many have been left fumbling given the anonymity of the offie.

Who is Saransh Jain?

Saransh is a 33-year-old Madhya Pradesh-born cricketer who has waited for his dream call for many years. After having a bag full of records under his name in domestic red-ball cricket, Jain's time was pretty near to catching the attention of the BCCI and the selection committee.

The India vs Sri Lanka series gave the Ranji Trophy star an opportunity to break into the setup, where a utility player like him could very well be the future if he proves his worth.

While unknown to many, avid cricket fans know him for his stellar performance in the Ranji Trophy Elite 2025-26, where, representing Madhya Pradesh, Jain impressed with 30 wickets and 518 runs. It is also worth noting that he bagged 16 wickets in four innings in the last Duleep Trophy, with utter demolition through his spin bowling.

A strike bowler who can both effectively dismantle batting line-ups and anchor under pressure is what India needed after the Washington Sundar scare.

The India A vs Sri Lanka A Tour That Paved The Road

While the Indian Premier League is primarily the audition floor and a 'test of strength' for white-ball cricketers, tournaments like the Ranji Trophy also often create pathways for cricketers like Saransh Jain.

However, it was also the India A vs Sri Lanka A tour which helped Jain gain the spotlight he deserves. In that tour, bowling in four Test innings from two matches, Jain bagged seven wickets with a four-fer in the first innings of the second Test.

He also impressed with a 140-ball 70 at No. 7, which further underlines why he can be one of the deciding factors in the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, especially in Sri Lankan turning conditions.

How impactful has Jain been in his red-ball career?

Jain has been a gem of a cricketer who started his career in domestic cricket back in 2014. He hasn't played the IPL yet and went unsold after being listed for a base price of ₹30 lakh.

Nevertheless, his red-ball career has been a shining one. The cricketer has 2,223 runs in first-class cricket with 188 wickets in the same format. He averages 31.75 with the bat and 27.30 with the ball from a total of 97 innings.

If Saransh Jain manages to get a game in the series, which is very likely, he will be only the third Indian player to have made his India debut before his IPL debut, besides Murali Vijay in Tests and Mohammed Shami in ODIs.

Overall, Jain is an impressive prospect that the BCCI might look into if he manages to outshine others in the India vs Sri Lanka Tests, which are scheduled for August 15 and 23. Whether Ajit Agarkar and Co. back him after the series or not will remain a question since Sundar's experience in international cricket could be the primary differentiator.
