Things have gone from bad to worse for Team India as they will be without their star all-rounder Washington Sundar for the 3rd and final ODI against England on Sunday. The series is levelled at 1-1 as the Three Lions bounced back in the 2nd ODI with a four-wicket win.

The caravan now moves to Lord’s in London, which will decide the winner of the series. For India, it is a heavy blow because Washington Sundar will not take any further part in the series and will return home to recover.

Washington Sundar Ruled Out With Hamstring Injury

Washington Sundar pulled his hamstring when he walked to bat in the 2nd innings. Notably, India were reduced to 178/4 when the southpaw walked to bat. Notably, the left-handed batter pulled his hamstring off the first run he took.

Sundar was in pain and even called the physios to assess the pain. Eventually, the GT star continued to bat and returned to the pavilion after scoring 2 (5). What looked like a minor injury turned serious after Washington Sundar did not take the field in the 2nd innings.

“I personally felt that Washington’s injury happened after he took his first run at mid-off and hurt his hamstring. It looked like a hamstring injury,” remarked Sitanshu Kotak after the 2nd ODI.

In the latest developments, Kushan Sarkar from PTI confirmed that Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the England ODIs and that his recovery might take longer than expected. The big worry for India is that Sundar has been good in Tests but is doubtful for the Sri Lanka Tests.

Washington Sundar Unlikely To Be Fit For Sri Lanka Tests

Following the England series, India will travel to Zimbabwe for T20Is. However, their real Test begins on August 15 when they travel to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series. The report stated that Sundar has less than two weeks to convince the selectors about his fitness to get a Test spot.

Talking about the 26-year-old’s Test stats, he has 41 wickets in 18 matches and has also scored 937 runs with the bat. Hence, India might miss Washington Sundar in Sri Lanka, where his all-round abilities would have been useful.

India Team Hit With Injuries

Washington Sundar has become India’s third player to be ruled out of the England ODIs. Notably, Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy were also pulled out of the ODI squad because of hamstring injuries.

The Men in Blue were hit with another injury scare when Shubman Gill was retired hurt in the 1st ODI due to cramps in his legs. However, much to every fan’s relief, the India captain returned to his 100% in the 2nd ODI.

Talking about Washington Sundar, the India all-rounder has a tryst with injuries. Early in 2026, when India played New Zealand, Sundar fractured his rib and missed the entire series. Not only that, but Sundar joined the Indian team right in the middle of T20 World Cup 2026.
