James Coles for SEC in SA20 [Source: X]
The Hundred 2026 auction buzzed with heavy picks, expensive bids, and unexpected unsold players. However, what resonated most from the auction was the most expensive player in the event, Sussex cricketer James Coles.
Giving the top marquee players of England a run for their money, James Coles, a domestic English cricketer, was the highest and most expensive player, who was sold to the London Spirit for a whopping £390K. Coles, initially listed for just £75K, was fiercely fought for, especially after his recent rise.
The Coles Story Showing Early Promise
Born on April 2, 2004, in Aylesbury, Coles is from Buckinghamshire, England. He grew up in a sports-loving family where he was introduced to cricket at a very young age.
After attending the Magdalene College School in Oxford, James Coles began his journey in the Buckinghamshire county youth setup while playing for Aston Rowant in the Oxfordshire Cricket League. At just 12 years of age, Coles joined the Sussex Academy, where he is currently a very successful domestic cricketer.
Notably, during his junior days, he also received the Oxford Junior Sportsman of the Year award for being the most outstanding under-16 schoolboy cricketer in England.

The Sussex Breakthrough Of James Coles
The 21-year-old slow left-arm orthodox spinner all-rounder, at 16 years and 157 days, became the youngest ever debutant for Sussex in its history, breaking a record that had been held since 1870.
His debut on September 6, 2020, saw him play in the Bob Willis Trophy, where he impressed by dismissing players like Rory Burns and Ben Foakes.
The 51st first-class match player is a glaring sensation with the bat as well as with the ball. He averages 38.42 in red-ball cricket from 82 innings, while having eight centuries and 12 half-centuries to his name.
With the ball too, he has successfully taken 57 wickets, while having a strike rate of 74.4 and an economy rate of 3.75, as he boasts best figures of 6/81 in a match. His List A credentials are equally impressive, with an average of 22.85 from 21 matches and 23 wickets at an economy rate of 5.84.
When Coles Stole The Limelight
Although his first professional deal with Sussex was in 2021, his breakthrough season was 2023 when he scored his first century against Glamorgan. As for international tours, James Coles also received a call-up to the England Lions for tours to India and Australia back in 2024–25.
Besides domestic national cricket, Coles has also played two seasons of The Hundred and has good representation in the Vitality Blast.
In the recently concluded SA20 season, Coles represented Sunrisers Eastern Cape where he scored 152 runs at an average of 38 from seven appearances, while also taking five wickets during the process. In The Hundred, though, he has a slightly lesser average of 21 from 16 appearances while having six wickets at an economy rate of 8.2.
Coles Becomes The Most Expensive Buy of The Hundred 2026 Auction
James had a tough bidding contest where he was listed for £75K. The bid was initially fought between Birmingham Phoenix and Manchester Super Giants until Trent Rockets and London Spirit joined in.
The aggressive bidding war was further intensified by Sunrisers Leeds, where London Spirit were eventually declared the winner after 35 bidding rounds, leading Coles to be roped in for a whopping £390K.
This has now left Coles as the fourth-highest priced player in the 100-ball competition, where Harry Brook, Phil Salt, and Jofra Archer were retained and pre-signed ahead of the auction.
Is James Coles Playing IPL 2026?
With Coles becoming such a sensation after his SA20 exploits with both bat and ball, many might wonder whether James Coles is playing IPL 2026 or not.
However, to be clear, he is not playing the IPL 2026 season since he did not register for the auction ahead of the tournament.
Now, with his talent recognised in The Hundred 2026 auction, it seems likely that Coles may look to expand his overseas exposure through a future edition of the Indian Premier League.
