Many moments pass, but only a few make the cricket world pause and truly feel the game, and Bangladesh defeating the mighty Australia under Ricky Ponting was one such moment, a result so unexpected that it echoed across the cricketing world and left everyone in stunned silence.

June 18, 2005 at the NatWest Tri-Series 2005 in Sophia Gardens became more than just a date on the calendar. It was the day Bangladesh, still finding its feet in international cricket, rose beyond numbers and expectations to script a victory that echoed far beyond Cardiff.

The cricket world still looks back on that day as something close to a miracle. Bangladesh have not beaten Australia in ODIs since, yet on that day a young side rose beyond limits and belief, bringing giants to their knees and creating a moment that still echoes through time.

Disciplined Bangladesh attack keeps Australia in check

Coming into their second game of the NatWest Tri-Series 2005, Bangladesh were under pressure after losing to England and needed a win to stay alive. Up against a dominant Australian side led by Ricky Ponting, expectations heavily favoured the world champions.

After being asked to bowl first, Bangladeshi pacers started strongly, removing Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting inside the powerplay. However, Matthew Hayden and Damien Martyn steadied the innings, with Michael Clarke also adding a patient half century.

Eventually, late contributions from Michael Hussey and Simon Katich pushed Australia to 249 for 5 in 50 overs. Tapash Baisya was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with three wickets, while Mohammad Rafique controlled the middle-overs conceding just 31 runs in his 10.

Ashraful’s Masterclass turns the tide in Epic run chase

Chasing 250 for a historic win, Bangladesh stumbled early as the openers failed to get going. Tushar Imran showed brief intent, breaking the shackles, but it was young Mohammad Ashraful who arrived with responsibility, walking in with the scoreboard reading 51 for 2 and pressure mounting quickly.

The situation worsened at 72 for 3 before captain Habibul Bashar joined Mohammad Ashraful, and together they formed a defining 130-run partnership. Ashraful played with fearless intent, striking boundaries at will and bringing up a stunning maiden ODI century off just 100 deliveries.

With 23 needed off 18 balls, Jason Gillespie dismissed Ashraful, offering Australia a glimmer of hope to comeback in the contest. But Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Rafique held their nerve, finishing the chase calmly and sealing a famous victory for Bangladesh with four balls remaining.

A day that promised a new dawn for Bangladesh cricket

It was Bangladesh’s first and only ODI win over Australia to date, a result that felt like the dawn of a new era. In those months they toppled giants, including India just 6 months ago, hinting at greatness, yet even after two decades, that early promise has only been partially realized.

Mohammad Ashraful emerged as a young star that day in Cardiff, announcing himself to the world with brilliance and fearlessness. Though he never fully realized his immense potential, he gave Bangladesh a moment of magic, a victory that remains etched in cricketing history forever.
