Team India has had a tough time so far on the ongoing UK tour, losing the T20I series in Ireland and England. Head Coach Gautam Gambhir has been facing the backlash for the disastrous outings, not able to win a solitary fixture since the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Although the Men in Blue have won two successive ICC titles since Gambhir joined in 2024, his numbers have been atrocious in bilaterals. With the former opener at the helm, India have been whitewashed in two Test series at home, apart from series defeats in Sri Lanka, Ireland and England.

The BCCI has said it will hold a review meeting about the team's performance after the conclusion of the UK tour.

BCCI not keen on removing Gautam Gambhir

There is an ongoing notion floating in the media that the BCCI might look to take a call on Gautam Gambhir's future as the head coach. However, a report from Revsportz has put cold water on the social media claims.

According to reports, the top brass of the Indian board are not keen on revoking Gambhir's contract. However, some contracts of the coaching staff members may come to an end, and won't be renewed.

"The BCCI will not judge him (Gautam Gambhir) solely on performances in bilateral T20Is," the report added. "The shortest format is lower down the priority list for Indian cricket at the moment."

It is worth mentioning that assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate may not be retained after the IND vs ENG ODIs. Meanwhile, T Dilip is said to continue as India's fielding coach. Meanwhile, Morne Morkel is apparently in talks with a couple of IPL franchises.

Gautam Gambhir & co. to be rested for Zimbabwe tour

It has been all but confirmed that the Gautam Gambhir-led coaching staff will get a rest during India’s next assignment, a three-match T20I series in Zimbabwe.

VVS Laxman will tour with the Shreyas Iyer-led side as an interim head coach, along with the support staff from the CoE.

After the conclusion of the ODIs against England, the IND vs ZIM will begin on July 23 at Harare. Interestingly, Sanju Samson, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel have been rested, while Prabhsimran Singh, Ashok Sharma and Harsh Dubey are included.

India auditioning for WC 2027 in England

Nevertheless, Gautam Gambhir, currently in England, is concentrating on the three-match ODI series vs England. The team management will be drawing up its final blueprint for the ODI World Cup 2027, aiming for a squad balanced between youth and experience.

At Edgbaston, Team India lost the toss, but Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar initiated a collapse for England, with half of their side down on 80 runs in 17 overs.

Although the conditions in South Africa will be completely opposite to those in England, the Men in Blue can surely test their crop of faster bowlers. Thus, Krishna, Brar and Prince Yadav are part of the ODI squad for England.
