Glenn Phillips catch (Source: AFP)
Some moments in cricket defy logic, where instinct and athleticism often converge to produce something truly unforgettable on the field. What once stood as a breathtaking display of fielding brilliance now carries a layer of irony, as the two players involved now find themselves fighting for a common cause.
The incident we are referring to is the moment when Glenn Phillips became a ‘Superman’ of sorts for New Zealand to dismiss Indian opener Shubman Gill in the grand finale of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Today, both Gill and Phillips are now teammates in Gujarat Titans colours in the ongoing IPL 2026 season to turn a moment once defined by rivalry into an unlikely partnership in franchise cricket.
When Glenn Phillips became a ‘Superman’ to leave Shubman Gill stunned
Team India took on New Zealand in the final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy back in March 2025 last year at the Dubai International Stadium. Chasing 252 for glory, the Indian team got off to a flier courtesy of a swift 105-run opening partnership between captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

However, when Gill reached 31* off 50 balls, gun fielder Glenn Phillips opened the floodgates for New Zealand by snaring an absolute blinder at short extra cover. With Gill dispatching New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner for a certain boundary, Phillips made a huge leap and held on to a stunner with his outstretched right hand.
Glenn Phillips’ fielding brilliance nearly undid India’s opening onslaught, as the ‘Men in Blue’ soon slipped from 105-0 to 122-3. As it turned out, an attacking 76 from Rohit Sharma, and a crucial 48 from Shreyas Iyer and another 34* by KL Rahul eventually helped Team India cruise to a comfortable six-wicket win with an over to spare.
From rivals to teammates: A Gill-Glenn story
Exactly a year later, Shubman Gill and Glenn Phillips now find themselves fighting for the same cause at the Gujarat Titans camp in the IPL 2026 season. It is worth noting that Phillips was acquired by the Titans franchise back in late 2025 last year during the IPL 2026 auction.
The New Zealand cricketer was even included in the Gujarat Titans playing XI for their opening match of the tournament against Punjab Kings on Tuesday, March 31 at the Mullanpur Stadium in New Chandigarh.
Shubman Gill, meanwhile, continues to remain as Gujarat Titans captain as confirmed by the franchise mere months prior to the launch of the competition.
Glenn Phillips and his flair for stunning catches
The 2025 Champions Trophy catch was not the only exceptional snared grabbed by Glenn Phillips in his career. Earlier in that same tournament, the New Zealand all-rounder pulled off a blinder inside the inner circle to get rid of a dangerous Virat Kohli in the opening round.
Earlier this month, Phillips also grabbed a stunner to dismiss England’s well-set batter Jacob Bethell in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
