In the 44th fixture of the IPL 2026 season, the Mumbai Indians competed against CSK at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Batting first, MI posted 159/7 on the board and scripted a rare record in T20 format history.

Hardik Pandya had opted to bat first after winning the toss. However, they lost opener Will Jacks early before Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir built a 58-run partnership.

Dhir was the top run scorer of MI’s innings as he hammered 57 off 37 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Mumbai Indians achieve a mega feat in T20 cricket

Meanwhile, during the game, MI became the first team in the world to score 50,000 runs in the T20 format.

They needed 114 runs to reach the landmark, and the batters managed to cross it in the 15th over, officially going past the 50,000-run mark.

MI are now the first-ever team globally (franchise or international) to hit 50,000 T20 runs. This record includes runs scored in the IPL and Champions League T20 games.

Mumbai Indians surpassed the Somerset County Club, RCB and even CSK to achieve this mega landmark.

Most runs in T20s by a team

  • Mumbai Indians - 50,003
  • Somerset - 48,244
  • RCB - 47,304
  • CSK - 46,438

This is an example of sheer dominance that the Mumbai Indians have had in franchise leagues for years.

MI fall short of a strong total

Meanwhile, coming back to the MI vs CSK game, Mumbai had a disappointing finish at 159/7. Apart from Naman Dhir, no batter was able to score more than 25 runs.

Tilak Varma departed after just 5 runs in 8 balls. Captain Hardik Pandya struggled massively, scoring 18 off 23 balls with a 78.26 strike rate. His knock created a vacuum of 15-20 runs, which could prove devastating for the Mumbai Indians in the chase.

Even Krish Bhagat and Robin Minz couldn’t leave an impact in the death overs, and MI clearly fell a few runs short of their desired total.

Anshul Kamboj continues to shine for CSK

Meanwhile, for CSK, Anshul Kamboj extended his dream form. He picked 3 wickets for 32 runs in his four overs. His dismissals included Will Jacks and Hardik Pandya. Kamboj is now tied with Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the purple cap race at 17 wickets.

Noor Ahmad supported Kamboj with two wickets for 26 runs. Ramakrishna Ghosh and Jamie Overton also grabbed a wicket each to restrict MI to a below-average total.

Overall, the chase could be tricky, but CSK are clear favourites. They know the conditions better, and the scoreboard pressure has also eased after the bowlers did a brilliant job in the death overs of the first innings.
