In an unexpected development, the BCCI created an imaginary group chat featuring three of India’s greatest captains. However, the group had no mention of Virat Kohli, which triggered the fans on social media.

It all began when Suryakumar Yadav posted a picture with Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni ahead of the MI vs CSK clash in IPL 2026. He playfully urged the fans to suggest a group name for the trio.

Interestingly, apart from fans, the official BCCI handle responded to Suryakumar Yadav’s plea and suggested the name "The CUP-TAANS.”

The board even posted an AI image of the group chat featuring Suryakumar, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni. The trio is special because all three have led India to major ICC titles across different eras.

MS Dhoni led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma captained India to the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

Suryakumar Yadav also led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup. Together, they represent multiple generations of Indian cricket leadership and six ICC trophies combined.

Virat Kohli fan base triggered by the BCCI’s post

However, the BCCI's post triggered Virat Kohli’s fanbase. Kohli, who led India for nearly a decade, didn’t find a spot in the group chat, as he has zero ICC trophies to his name as captain.

Under Kohli’s captaincy, India stayed at the top of the Test rankings for multiple years. However, the absence of an ICC trophy is still something that taints his leadership career.

Despite that, fans were not happy with the BCCI, and many accused them of disrespecting the legend. Social media was filled with hate comments as fans rallied against the BCCI for allegedly running an agenda against Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli retired from Tests and T20Is

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is no longer an active three-format player for India. He quit the T20I format after India’s 2024 World Cup win. Moreover, after India’s defeat in the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli bid goodbye to the Test format as well.

He is currently active in the ODI format and plans to play the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside Rohit Sharma. However, according to unverified rumours, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar share a different vision.

Gambhir and Agarkar are reportedly against having these two seniors in the World Cup squad, as they will be in their late 30s. However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma aren’t backing down without a fight either, as they are performing at the highest level.

It will be interesting to see how these conflicts shape up as the 2027 ODI World Cup is drawing near.
