Team India walloped Zimbabwe by 35 runs in the third T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday, July 26. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the outcome also handed the ‘Men in Blue’ a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep.

Captain Iyer has now unlocked a major T20I landmark, previously achieved by no other Indian skipper in history. It is worth noting that the result also course-corrected his disastrous beginnings as Indian captain to at least some extent.

Shreyas Iyer becomes first Indian captain to whitewash Zimbabwe

Shreyas Iyer, who was appointed as India’s T20I captain just a couple of months ago, has now become the first Indian skipper in history to record a T20I whitewash over Zimbabwe in a series of three or more matches.

Overall, Iyer also made Team India only the third cricket team in history to secure a whitewash over Zimbabwe with at least a 3-0 margin, joining fellow Asian teams Pakistan and Afghanistan. Here is a look at all instances of Zimbabwe suffering a T20I series whitewash.

Zimbabwe facing a clean sweep in a bilateral T20I series of 3-plus matches:

  • 0-3 vs Pakistan in Pakistan, 2020
  • 0-3 vs Afghanistan in UAE, 2021
  • 0-3 vs Afghanistan in Zimbabwe, 2022
  • 0-3 vs Afghanistan in Zimbabwe, 2025
  • 0-3 vs India in Zimbabwe, 2026, This Series*

How have other India captains fared against Zimbabwe

Previously, Suresh Raina also led Team India to a clean sweep over Zimbabwe in a T20I series way back in June 2010. However, the series consisted of just two matches.

Since then, an Ajinkya Rahane-led Indian side leveled its two-match series in Zimbabwe in 2015, while MS Dhoni guided the ‘Men in Blue’ to a 2-1 series win the following year.

A couple of years ago, it was Shubman Gill who led India to an emphatic 4-1 series win, leaving only Shreyas Iyer to complete 3-0 sweep in Zimbabwe when the latter achieved the unscaled feat in July 2026.

Shreyas Iyer course corrects his torrid captaincy start

Ever since replacing T20 World Cup winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav as the new captain of the Indian T20I side, Shreyas Iyer started off his tenure with demoralizing whitewashes in Ireland and England.

Under his leadership, the world champions lost a two-match T20I series in Ireland last month by a 0-2 margin, and failed to win even a single game in a five-match series in England.

Starting with six defeats in seven matches (one no-result), Iyer endured the worst-ever start in history among all Indian skippers.

The T20I series sweep in Zimbabwe, however, provided Iyer with a much-needed respite and helped restore some confidence after a torrid start to his captaincy journey.

While sterner challenges await, Shreyas Iyer will hope the commanding sweep in Zimbabwe marks the beginning of a turnaround in his tenure as T20I captain, as India aims to successfully defend its double world title at the 2028 ICC T20 World Cup.
