Shreyas Iyer has been reportedly appointed as Team India’s next T20I captain. The Punjab Kings skipper will likely be replacing 2026 T20 World Cup winning outbound leader Suryakumar Yadav to lead the Indian team.

While there has been no official confirmation regarding the development, neither from Shreyas nor from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), fans have already begun reacting to the reports with a mix of excitement and disbelief on social media.

Even though the BCCI is yet to officially announce Iyer as India’s next T20I captain, the official social media account of Bharat Petroleum seemingly ‘confirmed’ the news on their profile. Taking to X, the Indian oil and gas company congratulated the cricketer for his promotion.

On Friday, June 5, Bharat Petroleum took to its official social media account and congratulated Shreyas Iyer for becoming the next T20I captain of the Indian team, even though the cricketer is yet to be named so by the BCCI.

The company’s sudden and unexpected social media post regarding such a sensitive matter, even before BCCI could make an official statement, surprised one-and-all across the web. It is worth noting that the post has since been deleted by the company.

While many fans expressed their excitement over the prospects of Shreyas Iyer becoming captain, a few others questioned the decision. Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to Iyer’s T20I captaincy takeover announcement.

BCCI to confirm India’s next captain this weekend: Report

The BCCI is expected to announce India’s squad for their upcoming white-ball tour of Ireland and England this weekend on Saturday, June 6, according to several reports. One can assume that the Indian board will also lift the lid on the team’s new T20I captain during the announcement.

Suryakumar Yadav will likely be axed from the national squad altogether, even though the cricketer recently led the Indian team to a historic 2026 T20 World Cup win. Moreover, under his leadership, Team India did not lose a single T20I assignment, bilateral or otherwise.

Earlier this week, an ESPNCricinfo report suggested that Shreyas Iyer is being viewed as an ideal candidate to take India’s T20I cricket forward, while keeping the 2028 Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup in mind.

When did Shreyas last played a T20I for India?

Even though reports put Shreyas Iyer as an ideal candidate to lead Team India in T20I cricket going forward, the prolific top-order batter himself has not played a single 20-overs international since late 2023.

The cricketer gradually fell out of India’s T20I contention owing to a jam-packed middle and top order. However, Iyer has since enjoyed considerable success in the IPL, both as a batter as well as a captain.

In the past three editions of the tournament itself, he has led the KKR and the Punjab Kings franchises into the final, with the former even ending its 10-year title drought in 2024.
