Decoding Reasons Why Shreyas Iyer Ignored Prabhsimran Singh For IND Vs ZIM 3rd T20I

On Saturday afternoon, India won the second consecutive match under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy to seal the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe comprehensively. This meant there was room to present the bench with some opportunity in a dead rubber on Sunday afternoon. 

Still, Shreyas Iyer's trusted PBKS opener, Prabhsimran Singh, alongside Harsh Dubey, remained the only two names, finishing the series without any match.

While the conditions do not allow a second spinner in Dubey, there was an outside chance for Prabhsimran Singh to make his debut on the back of a remarkable IPL 2026. For the Punjab Kings, he scored 510 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 168.87.

As the promising wicketkeeper from Punjab remains on the sidelines for the final match of the series, we explore the reasoning behind this call from the captain and the team management.

Why did Prabhsimran Singh not get his debut vs Zimbabwe?

1. Abhishek Sharma’s recent form

Abhishek Sharma was the world number 1 T20I batter for a large part of the last T20 World Cup cycle. However, his international form since the T20 World Cup 2026 has taken a dip, and he has struggled to get big scores consistently. While he scored a fifty and 49 in England and Ireland, respectively, he failed to carry his momentum in this series.

To assert confidence in their first-choice opener, Abhishek, the team management decided to back him for the final T20I of the series.

2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s young international career

The 15-year-old boy wonder, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, became the youngest Indian to play international cricket earlier in the England tour. He played three matches in the series, scoring 14, 13 and 15 runs, respectively.

This is why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was destined to play all three matches of the Zimbabwe series, so that he could get a feel of international cricket and gets comfortable around the team easily. He finished the three-match series with two fifties, including the best score of 81(49).

3. Inability to play at number 3

Another player Prabhsimran Singh could have replaced, considering their roles as wicketkeepers, was Ishan Kishan. But in his 129-match T20 career for PBKS and Punjab combined, Prabhsimran Singh has played almost all his matches as the opener. He thrives inside the first six overs, taking advantage of the field restrictions.

Hence, replacing Ishan Kishan at number 3 would have been an unfair move for the right-hand batter. Neither of the two current openers is known to bat at number 3, making it impossible to fit all three to play in the same playing XI.

4. Team combinations

Apart from the aforementioned reasons, Prince Yadav and Shivam Dube made way for Ashok Sharma and Suryansh Shedge in the playing XI.

Prince Yadav going out for Ashok Sharma was a forced change due to a hamstring niggle for India’s newest fast bowling sensation, and he had to be replaced with a like-for-like player, i.e., a fast bowler.

Similarly, Iyer's Mumbai teammate Shivam Dube had to be replaced by a medium pace bowling all-rounder, who could bat in the middle-order — hence, Suryansh Shedge.

When will Prabhsimran Singh get his India debut?

While Prabhsimran Singh has shown immense potential as an opener in the IPL and domestic cricket, India’s opening batting riches are at their peak, with high-quality options, especially in T20 cricket.

Currently, apart from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson is ahead of him in the pecking order. Sanju was rested for this series, making room for Prabhsimran in the squad. In their next assignment at the Asian Games, Sanju Samson is going to re-join the squad in place of Prabhsimran Singh, extending his wait for his debut.

As things stand, it is unlikely that Prabhsimran gets his maiden cap in the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, with the focus shifting towards ODI cricket for the next 12-15 months, Shreyas Iyer could test out more and more options in T20Is, and he is right around the setup to potentially pounce on the opportunity.
