Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam created history as he scored a brilliant hundred against the West Indies in the first Test and went past former opener Tamim Iqbal to etch his name in the record books.
On a sluggish wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, almost all the Bangladesh batters struggled, but Shadman stood tall as he played a composed knock (105 off 234 balls) and became the first Bangladesh opener to score a Test century vs the Windies at home.
Shadman Islam created new feat with century vs West Indies
On Day 1 of the first Test, the Bangladesh opener remained unbeaten at 99 as rain stopped play. However, on Thursday morning, he completed his century (his 3rd) in the Test as he surpassed Tamim Iqbal in a historic feat.
Shadman’s 105 was the highest individual score by a Bangladesh opener at home against the West Indies. The previous best was Tamim, who scored 83 against the Caribbean side at home.
Highest individual score by a Bangladesh opener vs West Indies at home
- Shadman Islam - 105
- Tamim Iqbal - 83
- Imrul Kayes - 44
- Al Sahariar - 34
- Hannan Sarkar - 25
Interestingly, the 31-year-old is the first centurion on home soil against the West Indies (as an opener), and nobody before him attained this feat.
Shadman, the lone warrior in Bangladesh's struggling 1st innings
The wicket was slow, and spinners came into play early in the first innings. Shadman opened the batting for the Tigers, and while others failed to deliver the goods, he read the wicket perfectly.
On one hand, Jomel Warrican was running riot as the spinner picked up 5 for 53 to dismantle the Bangladesh batting. On the other hand, the opener kept his calm as he scored a magnificent hundred that helped his side score 272 in the first innings.
Out of 272, Shadman alone scored 105, and the next best individual score was 42, as almost everyone failed to play the West Indian spinners.
Bangladesh would hope he can continue the good work in the second innings of the first Test match.
