Ahead of the 4th T20I against New Zealand on Friday, India’s match-winner, Tilak Varma, revealed that he has been working hard on his bowling and is confident of using the same trait in limited-overs cricket.

A right-arm off-break bowler by nature, Tilak hardly bowls in T20Is for India, but with places to be grabbed in the Indian squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the left-handed batter is keen on rolling his arms in order to get a place in the team.

Tilak Varma keen on becoming a bowling threat after batting exploits

Speaking to the reporters ahead of the 4th T20I, Tilak Varma said:

"The team management and I have discussed this, and I have put in a lot of work on my bowling," Tilak said, as quoted by ANI.

The Indian batter further revealed that with Naman Dhir on the side as an all-rounder, there hasn’t been an immediate need for him to roll his arms, but behind the scenes, he has been regularly practising to bowl, if needed.

"Right now, Naman Dhir is in the squad and bowling well, so there hasn't been an immediate need for me to roll my arm over. But behind the scenes, l practice regularly and feel confident in my bowling. When an opportunity comes, I bowl.

Right now, Naman is doing a solid job in T20s, and when someone is bowling well, you do not take the ball away from them. But whenever an opening arises, I will certainly step in and do the job," he said.

How has Tilak Varma fared as a bowler across formats?

With plenty of all-rounders on the Indian side, Tilak is hardly utilised by the Indian captain. However, he boasts a stellar bowling record in the T20I format, as the off-break bowler has conceded 64 runs in 63 balls and has taken 5 wickets.

Moreover, in domestic cricket, the 23-year-old has picked up 8 wickets in first-class cricket, 11 in List-A, and 12 across all T20 matches.

He is more than a handy spinner, and the southpaw has been working hard to cement his place in the 50-over format, where head coach Gautam Gambhir loves having players who can bowl a bit.
