Waqar Younis, the legendary Pakistan cricketer, picked Virat Kohli over Babar Azam in a rapid-fire round hosted by journalist Shubhankar Mishra. Ever since Babar made his international debut, he has been compared with the Indian great, and now Waqar has finally settled the debate.
Babar’s batting style and his ability to score runs, especially in the ODIs, have been compared with Kohli, but speaking on the Shubhankar Mishra podcast, Waqar stated that Kohli is a bigger player than the Pakistan star, Babar.
Waqar Younis settles Kohli-Babar debate
The host asked Waqar Younis: If you have to pick one player in your team, who would it be? Babar Azam or Virat Kohli?
The Pakistan great didn’t even hesitate as he picked Kohli for his team, an answer which didn’t shock many.
Babar started on the front foot, and by August 2023, he had 19 ODI centuries to his name. However, in the last 3 years, the numbers have dipped, and he has scored only a solitary ODI ton. His numbers have also witnessed a decline in the other two formats.

Kohli, on the other hand, had a dip from 2020-2022, but the legendary batter resurrected himself, and has constantly evolved his game, and has gone far ahead of Babar.
Waqar Younis' fiery answers in the rapid fire round
Not only on Kohli-Babar, but the former Pakistan captain also gave fiery answers to other rapid-fire questions.
Between Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam-ul-Haq, Waqar picked the Indian great, Tendulkar. The Indian dominance continued as Jasprit Bumrah was given a nod ahead of Pakistan ODI captain Shaheen Afridi.
His first pick from Pakistan was the opener Saeed Anwar, as he picked him over India’s Virender Sehwag. However, in the Rahul Dravid vs Younis Khan battle, Waqar selected Dravid.
The host also asked the Pakistan legend to pick between two prodigies, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sameer Minhas, but the 54-year-old added that he hasn’t seen enough of them to make a choice.
In the last question, the Pakistan pacer was asked to choose between MS Dhoni and Javed Miandad for the finisher role, and Waqar picked MSD, as he has finished more games for India than Miandad had done for Pakistan.
