Josh Inglis had big shoes to fill as he replaced Steve Smith in the third Test match against South Africa, and the batter didn’t disappoint as he scored a terrific hundred to put his side in a strong position on Day 3.

Playing at Newlands, Cape Town, Inglis came into bat when the Australian side lost their third wicket, and the keeper-batter struck a fine century to create a new Australian record at this venue.

Inglis creates two huge feats with century in Cape Town

This was his second Test hundred, and it created a new feat for the middle-order batter as he became the first Australian batter to score a Test century in Cape Town since David Warner’s 145 in the third innings in 2014.

Since the 2014 Test, Australia have played only a solitary red-ball game in Cape Town (2018), but that infamous contest witnessed no centurion as Inglis broke the mini drought.

Interestingly, he became the first-ever Australian batter to have multiple centuries across all three formats (Tests, T20Is, and ODIs).

The batter also stitched a crucial partnership alongside Alex Carey to steer Australia to a strong position at the start of Day 3 in Cape Town.

Inglis proves selectors right with strong performance

Inglis was brought into the team after Steve Smith removed himself from contention with a neck injury on the morning of day one. Interestingly, the keeper-batter nearly missed the Test series due to a fracture he sustained during the South Africa ODIs.

However, he recovered on time and was included in the do-or-die match against South Africa in Cape Town. Against a strong bowling attack, the batter played an aggressive knock and repaid the faith with a quickfire 102.

His aggressive batting put South Africa on the back foot as the player scored his second century in the red-ball format.

Inglis-Carey etches name in history books vs South Africa

Inglis, alongside Alex Carey, took the attack to the South African bowlers, and in the process, they created history.
