In a groundbreaking update, Mumbai Indians (MI) have released three members of their coaching staff, i.e. Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson, ahead of IPL 2027 mini-auctions.

Malinga served as the bowling coach of the five-time champions from 2024-26, while he was their mentor in IPL 2018.

Mhambrey, also the bowling coach, was with the franchise in two different stints: 2011 to 2017 and 2024-26. Meanwhile, Hopkinson served as the fielding coach for two years, starting ahead of IPL 2025.

MI release Malinga, Mhambrey, Hopkinson

The MI franchise announced the release of Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson through a press release, while thanking the three legendary coaches.

Under Mhambrey, MI won their first three IPL titles, while during the Malinga and Hopkinson’s stints, the joint-most successful IPL franchise won zilch.

"Mumbai Indians today announced that Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson will be moving on from their respective roles in the men’s team coaching setup, thanking each of them for their commitment, contribution and service to the franchise," thanked MI via a press release.

The release of three coaches hints at a new era at Mumbai, which recently replaced Mahela Jayawardene with Kieron Pollard as the head coach.

MI to trade off Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2027 mini auction?

If media reports are to be believed, MI are on the verge of letting go of their captain, Hardik Pandya. The Mumbai-based franchise is in talks with multiple teams, and almost everyone is interested in the prolific all-rounder.

Pandya was traded to Mumbai from Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024 after doing exceptionally well with GT, winning a maiden title on the first attempt and finishing as runner-up in the second.

However, the MI-Pandya marriage didn’t fare well, as the team performed sub-par in two of the three seasons, despite having the biggest names in their squad.

The IPL trade deadline is November 15, so the announcement isn't far off, if there is one. It would be interesting to see who will lead MI in the next season if they part ways with Hardik Pandya as well.
