Indian captain Shubman Gill arrived in Auckland for the upcoming 5-game ODI series against New Zealand. However, during a practice session, Gill was spotted using a mysterious device named ‘Temple’ on his forehead.

Gill will lead India in the ODI and Test series against New Zealand in the next couple of months. Notably, he will play only the first 3 ODIs to manage his workload ahead of the Test assignment.

What is the ‘Temple’ device used by Shubman Gill?

Meanwhile, to begin his preparation for the ODI series, Shubman Gill landed in Auckland for a practice session. However, reporters on the ground noticed that Gill arrived wearing a mysterious device on his forehead called ‘Temple.’

The Temple device is an experimental wearable developed by entrepreneur Deepinder Goyal that aims to monitor changes in blood flow to the brain. It is a small, pill-shaped device worn around the temple area between the forehead and the ear.

Unlike conventional fitness trackers that primarily measure heart rate, steps and sleep, Temple focuses on physiological signals associated with brain blood flow and the body's response to physical and mental demands.

Temple apparently uses photoplethysmography (PPG) technology, an optical sensing technique that uses light to detect changes in blood volume in tissue. The intended use is to help people understand how physiological signals change with activities such as exercise, sleep, stress and recovery.

How can Temple device help athletes like Shubman Gill?

Now, these devices are extremely popular amongst high-level athletes like Shubman Gill. They have to constantly manage physical exertion, concentration, fatigue and recovery.

Hence, a wearable that reliably tracks relevant physiological changes could potentially give sports scientists additional information about how an athlete responds to training.

For India captain Shubman Gill, he can track physiological signal changes during demanding practice sessions. Moreover, Temple also helps in comparing recovery readings during rest and after strenuous activity.

It can investigate whether changes in physiological signals correlate with concentration, fatigue or workload. Hence, the Temple device is extremely useful and just like Gill, many professional athletes are likely to adopt this technology in the near future.
