Delhi Capitals’ young star Sameer Rizvi played a powerful knock of 90 off just 51 balls in a one-sided IPL 2026 clash against the Mumbai Indians. That exceptional knock landed him in an elite list featuring legends.
Mumbai Indians, batting first, posted just 162 runs on the board courtesy of Suryakumar Yadav’s 51 off 36 balls. However, the total proved to be not good enough as Rizvi delivered a storm.
Sameer Rizvi equals Virat Kohli’s record
Delhi Capitals had a tricky start to the chase, losing 2 wickets at just 7 runs on the board. However, Sameer Rizvi extended his red-hot form to pull DC out of the soup.
He stitched crucial partnerships with Pathum Nissanka and David Miller to keep Delhi’s chase cruising. Rizvi eventually ended up scoring 90 runs, missing out on a much-deserved hundred by just 10 runs. His knock included 7 fours and as many sixes.
Sameer Rizvi was rightly awarded the Player of the Match trophy for his batting blitz. Interestingly, this is his third consecutive POTM award, which landed him in an elite list.
Players with three consecutive POTM awards in IPL
- Jacques Kallis (2010)
- Virender Sehwag (2012)
- Glenn Maxwell (2014)
- Aaron Finch (2016)
- Virat Kohli (2016)
- Jos Buttler (2018)
- Ruturaj Gaikwad (2020)
- Sameer Rizvi (2025-26)
Rizvi has become the 8th player in IPL history to win three back-to-back Player of the Match awards. This list includes some of the biggest names in T20 cricket, including Jacques Kallis, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
In DC’s last game against LSG, Sameer Rizvi won the POTM award for his 70 off 47 balls knock. Moreover, in DC’s final game of IPL 2025 against Punjab Kings, Rizvi fetched the trophy for his 58* off 25 balls.

Sameer Rizvi is proving himself after a dip in IPL salary
Interestingly, in IPL 2026, Sameer Rizvi saw a massive dip in his earnings. Delhi Capitals retained him for ₹95 lakhs after they bought him at the same price in the IPL 2025 auction.
However, his maiden IPL contract was with CSK, where they paid him a whopping ₹8.4 crore. That year, he scored just 51 runs in 5 innings, and CSK eventually lost faith in him.
Regardless, the tables have now turned. Delhi Capitals banked on Sameer Rizvi at the right time to sign him on a much lower contract value. Now, the low-risk investment is paying high dividends to the Capitals early into the IPL 2026 season.
DC topped the points table after back-to-back wins
In match no. 8 of IPL 2026, Delhi Capitals trashed Mumbai Indians to seal a 6-wicket victory. MI posted a competitive but slightly under-par total of 162 runs on the board in the first inning.
In the absence of Hardik Pandya, the team struggled with only Suryakumar Yadav taking responsibility with the bat, scoring 51 off 36 balls.
On the other hand, DC chased comfortably, thanks to a match-winning knock from Sameer Rizvi. Pathum Nissanka played a supporting role, scoring 44 off 30 balls.
Moreover, Rizvi and Nissanka’s partnership of 78 runs helped Delhi Capitals recover from the early collapse of 7/2.
With that victory, DC have topped the points table with 4 points in 2 games, while MI slipped to sixth place.
