Sunday evening at the Newlands, Cape Town, saw yet another quality display from Dewald Brevis in the SA20 2025/26, scoring a century in a rescue act to keep his team, Pretoria Capitals, in the match from a precarious position against the two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final.
However, as fate would have it, the century was not enough for the Capitals to end the Sunrisers’ domination in SA20 as they fell short for the second time in the final against the same opposition. With this result, Brevis added his name to one of the rarest lists in T20 cricket: a centurion who ended on the losing side.
Till January 25, 2026, there have been 24 tons in T20 finals, and this is only the third time it has ended in a loss. Below is the full list.
Players with T20 final centuries in losses
1. Wriddhiman Saha vs KKR, 2014 – 115* (55)
In the first-ever final that Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) played in the IPL, KXIP were put in to bat by the Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru, and they lost two early wickets in Virender Sehwag and captain George Bailey. When Wriddhiman Saha walked in at 4, the score read 30/2 in 5.1 overs.
He put on a 129-run stand with Manan Vohra in 72 balls to pull his team back into the match, before Vohra was caught for 67 (52). Saha carried the bat and added 40 more runs to complete the innings with 115*(55), with 10 fours and 8 sixes and guided the team to 199/4 in 20 overs.
Unfortunately, the target was chased down by KKR in a last-over thriller, thanks to a 94(50) knock from Manish Pandey and a late cameo of 13*(5) from Piyush Chawla, sealing KKR’s second title.
2. JJ Smuts vs Lions, 2019 – 121 (60)
During the CSA T20 Challenge final in May 2019, the top two teams from the league, Lions and Warriors, went head-to-head in Johannesburg and Warriors were asked to bat by captain JJ Smuts.
After early wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickleton, captain Temba Bavuma added 165 in 89 balls with Rassie van der Dussen. He was dismissed for 104 off 63 with 11 fours and two sixes, while van der Dussen scored 73 (63) to guide their team to 203/4.
In response, the Warriors kept losing wickets at constant intervals, even being reduced to 19/3, 43/4 and 56/5. Amidst all the drama on the other end, captain JJ Smuts, who walked in at 5/1, batted till the final over, when they needed 18 off 6.
Having scored a six on the first ball, Smuts attacked Migael Pretorius again and top-edged it to Nono Pongolo, which ended his lone warrior knock of 121(60) with 11 fours and 7 sixes. Bjorn Fortuin was the leader of the pack with 4/27 off 4.
3. Dewald Brevis vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape – 101 (56)
The second-time finalists, Pretoria Capitals, were put in to bat by the Tristan Stubbs-led Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Cape Town and were soon reduced to 1/2 within the first 7 balls. This is when Brevis walked in to bat and rescued his team once again in the season.
Rather than trying to slow down and consolidate, Dewald Brevis preferred a blistering approach and got to his fifty in just 26 balls, notably scoring 20 off a James Coles over.
Dewald Brevis took another 27 balls to complete his ton in 53 balls on the big evening and was set for a big finish when Marco Jansen stepped up and got a double-wicket maiden in the penultimate over, including Dewald Brevis’ wicket for 101(56) with 8 fours and 7 sixes. After his wicket, the Capitals scored only 3 off 10 and ended with 158/7.
They looked set for their first title after getting SEC 48/4 in 8.4 overs, but the two Gqeberha, Matthew Breetzke and skipper Stubbs, stitched a match-winning stand. After taking a few overs to get in, the duo chased down 56 off the final four overs, including two sixes off the final over from Stubbs to seal the third title.
The two added 114*(65), and Stubbs got 63 (41) with two fours and four sixes. Breetzke scored 68 (49) with five fours and two sixes from 37* (36) at one stage. Notably, despite a loss, Dewald Brevis was named as the Player of the Match in this final.
